Paris National Opera Theater Orchestra, Georges Pretre (conductor)

Samson et Dalila, first performed in Weimar in 1877, is the second and best-known of the operas of Camille Saint-Saens (1835-1921), who took the familiar biblical story of Delilah, who feigns love for Samson, leader of the oppressed Hebrews, to betray him to the Philistines. Captured and shorn of the hair that gives him his superhuman strength, his prayer to God for help is answered when, with his strength returned to him one last time, he is able to bring down the pagan temple on the heads of Delilah and the Philistines.

In this famous recording, made in the Salle Wagram in Paris in 1962, the distinguished French conductor Georges Pretre directs Parisian choral and orchestral forces and a trio of great international singers in the leading roles, including the French baritone Ernest Blanc as an imposing High Priest.

Heading the cast is the Canadian tenor Jon Vickers (last heard in this series of opera reissues as Florestan in Fidelio as the hero. Rita Gorr, the Belgian mezzo-soprano, is the traitress, whose voluptuous music (including the seductive and justly famous aria 'Mon c|ur s'ouvre a ta voix') is just one of the highlights of Saint-Saens's gracefully melodic, superbly orchestrated and often fiercely dramatic score. – Marbecks.co.nz review
"EMI's Great Recordings of the Century is exactly what it says: these classic interpretations warrant a place in everybody's collection." – The Times (October 1998)
Jon Vickers sings magnificently, with great dignity and expression, and Rita Gorr's fine voice and distinguished manner make all her contributions rewarding.' – Gramophone
