in 2014 Lesley Rankine and her alter ego Ruby has put out her first full length record since 2001. May 2013 the hints started coming about what Ruby was up to with a video for the title track Waiting for Light. Then in July, we got an EP called with three new tracks. Ruby fans know that Lesley is not one of those people to put out new records to satisfy a studio or because she feels she needs to remind people who she is, she puts out music when she knows she really has something to say. This time Lesley has a lot to say, and to be honest Waiting for Light is her most personal record to date.
The opening track, is a slow little piece that showcases Lesley’s range as an artist, she really pours her emotion and soul to show people she is more than a trip-hop princess. If Waiting for Light the opening track was the calm, Last Life the next track is the storm. Lesley shows people that she is not older, she is better. This has a heavy beat that makes people want to turn it up loud and just get up. The song is laced with a catchiness and Lesley going back to her Pigface days with a vocal performance that is just really incredible. Fireweed is the next track and we get yet another flavor to what Rankine can deliver. This song really feels like Lesley wanted to show people that she is still faithful to Ruby’s roots and give them the trip hop with the thought provoking lyrics.
As the cd goes on we get Spin, which I will say is the best Ruby song since Fly. This song is every facet of Ruby’s history with a modern dreamy space age feel. This song showcases like the rest of the record, Lesley has been following the music scene and decided to continue on the path she always ran on and that is her own direction. This whole cd is about experimentation and emotion. To be honest this is the best cd of 2014, and for people, who think this is a sequel or continuation of Salt Peter or Short Staffed, wait till you see what Lesley is bringing with her comeback. This cd is all over the map in terms of what inspired her and the message this time out is simple yet gets told to us in complication. All hail the Queen-Lesley Rankine has returned.
