Cheikha Rimitti is the 70-year-old grandmother of rai, an intoxicating style of Algerian dance music. Whereas most rai is too exotic for Western ears, this album, produced in L.A. and Paris, matches Rimitti's still powerful wail with a wall of contemporary world beat dominated by horns, percolating rhythms, and clattering guitars.
