It's been nearly a decade since Patty Griffin battled breast cancer—and the drugs and radiation that were her weaponry also took away her voice. She's regained much of her vocal strength now, and she sounds more powerful than she did on 2019's self-titled album. But there's no getting around the fact that she also sounds different. She lightly trills and vocalizes on "Born in a Cage" before leaning into her new huskiness. The song is a remembrance of how Griffin's mother observed nature around her as she was entering the last chapter of life, and the imagery is haunting: "All over the world/ The little birds stop singing/ Are they gone or do they hide/ In the eaves/ All that I know is/ More and more are disappearing/ They don't say goodbye/ And no one sees them leave." When Griffin whispers "So tired, so tired," it's chill-inducing. So is her hushed, knowing delivery of "I call out to the souls" on "Long Time," an eerie, swampy number with stray blues-guitar notes lightly kicking out against the steady, quiet rhythm. Griffin's former romantic partner Robert Plant haunts the background, shining a brief light into the fog around her. "

There's more scars on me now/ That you can't get around," she sings on "The End," a swooning ballad dressed with weepy strings and keening fiddle. It's a gut punch—but Griffin isn't down for the count: "So I swallow my pride/ Like a big butterfly/ Floating around/ Inside of my chest." Within those lines, she seems ethereal. And that's the thing: Griffin may not sound like she once did, but that's because she has more colors on her palette now. It's not limiting; it's freeing. She stuns on the titular line of folksy "All the Way Home," emotive and powerful as she reaches for the rafters. "There's a place out on the edge of this town/ Where you'll find people like me," she sings from the POV of a life lived on the outside, while border-style guitar adds flourish. Her voice vibrates with emotion on idyllic "A Word." There's such vibrancy when she belts out "We can try again!" amidst the gospel blues of "I Know a Way." But Griffin knows history doesn't repeat itself: "You can't go down that road/ The one that you knew so well/ It disappeared in a landslide." It's a lesson she underscores on "Back at the Start," as well, the idea that there is still optimism in the future and we can all benefit from what we've learned from living. As the proto-rock guitar rings out and that snare beat grabs you, Griffin sounds sly telling the truth. "Day after day I stood in my own way/ In front of my own door … You might lose everything/ Spend years in the dark but/ It isn't the end, you're just back at the start." © Shelly Ridenour
