Monarchy - Monarchy (2010)

This far-out duo just broadcast the first ever gig into the universe from the space center at Florida and are the band which blogs haven’t stopped going on about for months. With their remixes of Ellie Goulding et al, collaborations with the likes of Holy Ghost! and their hidden identities and futuristic electro beats, Monarchy have cultivated a buzz which most could only dream of.

But doesn’t ‘mystery’ as a marketing tool feel a little stale at the moment?
Everyone who is anyone are wearing masks and the race to out the identities of the latest hype-act is becoming strung-out.

It’s with no hesitation we say Monarchy have a way of working rhythms and beats – their winding electricity and pitched vocals slither around their thought-out thumps with ease, and their synth-pop tone will no doubt widen their appeal from the specialist community.

Lead single, and highlight of the album, ‘Love Get Out Of My Way’ is a decent pop tune with hooks galore and finishing track ‘Travelling By Ambulance’ has an almost-endearing indie edge. However, it’s with great regret that this album is a disappointment. Their music just isn’t as exciting as their campaign.
