Lisa Ekdahl - Grand Songs (2021)

Vingt ans après ses débuts, Lisa Ekdahl s’amuse avec l’espièglerie, la finesse et la classe qu’on lui connaît à revisiter des perles pop, d’hier et d’aujourd’hui. Avec Grand Songs, la Suédoise fait même dans les grands écarts, reprenant Billie Eilish (Wish You Were Gay) comme les Beatles (I Should Have Known Better), Bob Dylan (Most of the Time) ou Beyoncé (If I Were a Boy), sans oublier Diana Ross et les Supremes (Stop! In the Name of Love), les Monkeys (Take a Giant Step) et James Taylor (You Can Close Your Eyes). Dès ses débuts et comme tout vocaliste jazz digne de ce nom, elle a excellé dans cet exercice périlleux qui permet aussi de mettre en avant la singularité d’un timbre vocal. Côté écrin, elle alterne ici entre quintet de jazz et grand orchestre avec cordes et les séquences intimistes s’éclipsent au profit d’un peu d’hédonisme luxuriant. Mais c’est quand elle ose le contrepied total qu’Ekdahl est la plus pertinente. À l’image de sa délicieuse version bossa d’I Should Have Known Better) et de sa reprise très jazz fifties d’If I Were a Boy, les deux temps forts d’un disque bien réconfortant.
