Writing about Bach's six sonatas and partitas for solo violin often focuses on the nature of the music: Are the pieces humanistic in tone? Do they reflect deep spiritual-numerological concerns? But the first thing the average listener is likely to notice about them is their sheer difficulty: their monumental quality comes in part from the fact that, as with Beethoven's Ninth Symphony, the musicians are struggling to re-create the music. That's partly the result of playing the music on a violin that wasn't built for it, and although there are plenty of recordings on a Baroque violin there are fewer players who have the means to deliver the music cleanly and confidently on one. Gottfried von der Goltz is noted both as a Baroque violinist and as conductor of the Freiburg Baroque Orchestra, and here he offers an "authentic" performance of the sonatas and partitas in a classic vein. He does not just use a period violin and (the important part) a Baroque bow, but selects a violin from Milan very close in time to Bach's music. And he applies it to the parts of the score that seem almost unplayable. The result is certainly not that they become technically easy, but a good deal of the huffing and puffing is removed. Unlike the solo cello suites, this set has an apex, the nearly 14-minute Ciaccona from the Partita No. 2 in D minor, BWV 1004, and you can sample it for a fair idea of the whole. The long strings of double stops in the latter part of the movement become just another variation in von der Goltz's hands, and the violin "chords," so difficult to grind out on a modern violin, come off his instrument trippingly. He even applies a much lighter touch than usual to single-line passages, giving the violin an unusual buzzy quality that gives the listener some relief from Aparte's inappropriately harsh studio sound. A complaint against some of the first generation of historical-instrument performers was that their interpretations lacked passion, and some may find the same issue here. But this can be safely recommended as state-of-the-art historical-instrument Bach playing.–James Manheim
