Recorded in Germany, July, 1993. Recorded in Germany with a solid rhythm section provided by Fred Hopkins on bass and Andrew Cyrille on Drums, LIVE '93 ACOUSTIC OCTFUNK is a mature and expressive bit of modern jazz. While it is Murray's alternately lilting and ferocious tone that is dominant, Hopkins and Cyrille provide a dynamic backdrop to the intensity of the songs. Much like Murray's output in the late 1970s, there is a distinct Coltrane influence in his sax work, especially on "Mr. P.C." and the beautifully haunting "Joanne's Green Satin Dress"(featuring a dizzying bass solo by Hopkins). If anyone can conjure up the spirit of how Coltrane might sound today, it's Murray. LIVE '93 ACOUSTIC OCTFUNK will appeal to devoted fans and recent converts, as it captures the essence of Murray's greatness.
