In a city that’s historically produced some fantastic keyboard players, Memphis musician Tony Thomas has proven to be one of its most venerable practitioners, both as pianist and organist. While the 79-year-old has released several albums over the course of a long career, Thomas has primarily worked in the service of others as a sideman and session player.
“I've made a few records with my own trio and they've always been fun to do, but we always did them on a shoestring,” said Thomas. “I've pretty much been a studio musician which means I've worked on everybody else's project, but I hadn't really thought of doing anything for myself properly.”
