With "Lagrime d'amante" La Compagnia del Madrigale turns again to the music of Claudio Monteverdi. This new Glossa publication faithfully conveys the beauty of the ensemble's vocal blend in a selection of five-part compositions, originating from Monteverdi in Cremona, Mantua and Venice, but focusing on the cornerstone of his art, the Sixth Book.
The act of singing while weeping – as Marco Bizzarini points out in his booklet essay-is somewhat impracticable, but Monteverdi repeatedly tried to overcome this improbability through his music, often relying on the best Italian poetry of the time: here, the fabulously vivid images of Torquato Tasso, Battista Guarini and Petrarch are well served by Monteverdi's musical response.

The program takes us through various emotional states that have to do with love: a lover who dies of love, the "partenza amorosa" (or the separation of the lovers), even a shepherd who accidentally hurts his beloved, but also the effusion of grief in the Lagrime d'amante al sepolcro dell'amata, a madrigal cycle with newly written words, which marks the death of the promising singer Caterina Martinelli, a pupil of the composer, but also the wife of Monteverdi in the year 1608 complained. The recently deceased bass Daniele Carnovich, to whom the group pays tribute, was involved in this work and others on this recording; the recordings were completed by Matteo Bellotto.
