This album weaves together three essential elements: the compositions of acclaimed American trumpeter Tom Harrell, the interpretations of those compositions by the Chris Coull Quartet and the exciting vocals of Imogen Ryall, who has written lyrics to Harrell's tunes, breathing new dimensions into his melodies.

Ryall has emerged as a major presence on the UK jazz scene, earning critical plaudits and award nominations for her previous works, including Sings the Charles Mingus / Joni Mitchell Songbook (Rubicon Classics, 2023) and Songs (Rubicon Classics, 2024), the latter co-created with Czech pianist and composer Emil Viklicky. On The Roof: The Music of Tom Harrell showcases eight of Harrell's compositions reimagined through Ryall's expressive vocals and lyrics, perfectly complemented by Chris Coull's consummate trumpet work.

Harrell, widely regarded as one of the finest trumpeters and composers of our times, has hundreds of recordings to his credit across four decades. He has stood alongside some of the most important figures in the history of jazz, including Bill Evans, Dizzy Gillespie, Gerry Mulligan and Horace Silver.

Chris Coull is a UK based trumpeter, well known internationally for his classic bebop style. He has played with Alan Barnes, Jerry Weldon and John Dankworth. He is joined by pianist Si Robinson, bassist Simon Woolf and drummer Joe Edwards.
