A langauge is the sophomore album of the Danish free improvising trio of drummer Claus Bøje, electric bassist Peter Friis-Nielsen, and pianist Christian Rønn, following Orandi (Nische, 2024). Like the debut album of the trio, it was recorded live, this time at KoncertKirken in Copenhagen in the summer of 2024.

The veteran rhythm section of Bøje and Friis Nielsen has been a defining creative force in the Danish free improvising scene since the late sixties, often working together, and throughout their rich career played with such great improvisers like Peter Brötzmann, Evan Parker, Ikue Mori, Fred Frith, John Tchicai, and Lotte Anker.. Rønn is a generation younger than Bøje and Friis Nielsen, and his work ranges from solo piano, electronics, sound art, film music, and free improvised music. He is also the curator of Spir festival, where Orandi was recorded, and the Nische label that releases the trio’s albums.

a langauge offers seven free improvised pieces that flirt with free jazz, contemporary music, minimalism, and abstract sound art, with great focus on detail. Bøje, Friis Nielsen, and Rønn formed an egalitarian trio, totally possessed by its collective art of the moment, and with an uncompromising determination to experiment with sound, time, and space. The urgent, tough, and raw bass playing of Friis Nielsen leads most of the pieces. Bøje’s drumming is much more powerful this time, and he and Friis Nielsen keep pushing Rønn to the most extreme, unpredictable terrains. The music of the trio relies on deep listening and allows the trio to alternate into unhurried, more sparse textures as on «Everchanging» or into reflective and minimalist textures as on «Reflecting». The last piece, «Prevail», suggests a more playful side of the trio, highlighting the infinite creative power of Bøje in his ninth decade on Earth and Friis-Nielsen, only in his eighth decade.
