Unlike any blues music released in the 1960s, the idiosyncratic acoustic forms created by J.B. Lenoir during his tenure with L&R Records recall traditional country blues while simultaneously pushing the genre in new directions. Miles removed–in conception and feel–from the electric Chicago blues of his early career, Lenoir's L&R work is wholly acoustic, intensely personal, and seems to pulse and surge to its own uniquely designed metronome. VIETNAM BLUES collects Lenoir's last two albums (before his untimely death in 1967), 1965's ALABAMA BLUES and 1966's DOWN IN MISSISSIPPI, both of which were produced under the supervision of blues icon Willie Dixon.

The Mancy of Sound is the follow-up release from influential alto saxophonist and composer Steve Coleman to last year’s critically acclaimed Harvesting Semblances and Affinities. That album was a statement of purpose that announced the return of Coleman to popular consciousness. The CD was named by Ben Ratliff in the New York Times as his #1 album of 2010 and was also voted among the top ten releases of 2010 in both the Jazz Times and Village Voice Critics Polls. His performance was thought by many to be the highlight among the almost forty bands that performed at the June 2010 Undead Festival in New York.

This is an arena rock CD complex and textured that will pull you into dark mysterious places. Weather your a straight up blues fan, rocker or metal freak, you'll be digging the action of Jay's great fret work. Amazing solos that are well orchestrated that will peel the paint off the walls. Sharon on bass, anchors all the tracks while laying it down and dirty with the drummer Abe as he carves up the beats red hot. Songs that rock and vocals that soar, this trio were all born under the same bad sign and sounds like a thousand harleys.

Billy has said many times the music that Jimi Hendrix played was nothing more than loud Blues. “OLD SCHOOL BLUE BLUES” is Billy Cox’s latest album. Billy wanted to return to a traditional blues feel. ROCKIN AND ROLLIN ON is the vanguard of the album. It serves to remind the listener that just like Jimi, although he has a Blues Soul, Billy's Spirit is definitely Rock and Roll. Songs with the rhythmic cadence of Salsa and R&B help to season this mostly Blues album.

The music on this album, with its suite-like sequence of compositions that flow like a cinematic reverie, comes across as a film-like invitation to a voyage. The spare, gently unfolding and intensely atmospheric melodies and moods deliver an invitation to listen with open ears…and to dream. Each composition is a mysterious, delicate gem, while the titles are full of references to Tarkovsky's life and work: "A celui qui a vu l'ange" is the epitaph found on his tombstone, while "Tiapa" and "Maroussia" are nicknames for his youngest child and his mother.

Abstract Logix | 2011

New York based plectorist extraordinaire Oz Noy makes his Abstract Logix debut with "Twisted Blues", his most eclectic album to date that displays his signature guitar sounds as well as for the first time showcases his profound love of blues. The guitar prowess featured on Twisted Blues Vol. 1 is obviously top notch but some tracks, like the eight-plus-minute “Two Centers,” feel a little long. For fans of instrumental jazz, blues, or rock, Oz Noy probably has something for them.

Trio 7 is the kind of record that can only be made when everyone involved can relax and just let the music go where it will. In the liner notes, bassist Santi Dibriano and drummer Thierry Arpino relate how they spent two days at Beck's Connecticut home having fun while they explored the tunes. This feeling is resonantly audible from the opening deep groove of John Coltrane's "Impressions." Beck maintains connections to many styles, including progressive rock and funk, and he can shift gears, as well as which electronic effect he uses, at will.

Guitar driven, melodic instrumental compositions, rich ballads, and evocative interpretations of songs by artists such Jimmy Webb, Carole King & Howard Greenfield, John Fullbright and Jim Hoke. With Reverb Babylon, his fourth solo album, Ware put 10 guitars and seven amplifiers through their paces as he and a complementary troupe hit the tone, taste and talent marks. The disc features pop (the Howard Greenfield/Carole King Crying in the Rain), country-flavored slide (Ware's Slidin' Into the Blue Door), surf (Jim Hoke's Subway Surfin'), the three-part, atmospheric title track and Spaghetti Western-ready (Ware's Tarnation Station). Ware and company mix up tempos and styles, building interest all the way. His guitars are the center of attention, but piano, organ, accordion and mandolin add very cool texture.

Diggin' deep on the riffage that matters with full-tilt Stratocasters blazing in the midnight sun, Dirty Dave Osti gets down on his axe, rips it hard and sets the six string dirtshack on fire. A fierce and powerful essential modern day "old school" bluesy heavy guitar rocker that is highly recommended to fans of Hendrix, Trower, ZZ Top & Johnny Winter.

This is an incredible album full of a solid sound coming out from many music styles. Pure electric blues together with a funky rock feel. Folk acoustic guitars against sweet atmospheric “delay” electric guitars. Soulful blues vocals harmonized together with gospel group vocals. The first time for the Blues Trackers releasing an album consisted only from their own music. After ten years with this line up the band made this album as a turning point to their musical journey.

Grizzled bluesman Steven Gene Wold's rags-to-riches life story will surely one day end up being adapted for one of those life-affirming musical biopics that so often sweep the boards come awards season. The man now known best as Seasick Steve left home to escape from his abusive stepfather as a young teen, lived as a hobo across Tennessee and Mississippi for the better part of nearly two decades, and was on the fringes of the same scene as Janis Joplin and Joni Mitchell while performing as a session musician in the '60s, before eventually receiving an unlikely commercial breakthrough at the grand old age of 65. It's this eventful back-story that makes the 21 primitive blues offerings on Walkin' Man: The Best of Seasick Steve, his first full-length compilation, so compelling.

I call it "American vibes melt into traditional shrimp-rock-blues". Most of the songs were written down in Florida where my parents live part-time. That’s why I call it shrimp-rock blues. The last couple of years I really dig the old traditional delta blues from the 30’s and some of the basic elements of the songs were further developed out of simple bluesy dobro slide ideas. It took a long time to finish the new album & we really tried to capture the most natural sounds out of a simple setup of: guitar-cables-pedalbords-more cables-amp head-speakercable-speaker cabinet – speaker-air-microphones-more cable etc.. ~ Michael Zander.

TELARC Blues CD-83523

On Kenny Neal's third Telarc release, One Step Closer, he combines the Louisiana musical traditions he grew up listening to with a wide range of contemporary material. Among the 12 tracks are soul-blues renditions of Bob Dylan's "Walk Out in the Rain," Nick Lowe's "High on a Hilltop," and John Hiatt's "Lover's Will." Neal's developing skills as a songwriting have been convincingly affected by roots rock and Americana, as showcased on "Backdoor Tipper," "No More One More Chance," "Whiskey Tears," and "She Ain't Happy Unless She's Sad." ~ Al Campbell
