As the BBC faces prickly Charter renewal negotiations this “look at what we did” two-parter fronted by Jonathan Dimbleby can do it no harm whatsoever. Dimbleby takes us through the Corporation's first big test of its broadcasting powers, its reaction to the Second World War in the face of heavy government disapproval and censorship, not to mention opposition from the country's mighty press barons. When war was declared the BBC cleared its schedules to play hours of deadly organ music. One bored listener claimed he'd “rather face the German guns”, and early attempts actually to broadcast from the front were a farce. Dimbleby's father Richard was one of the BBC's most famous wartime voices, but his start was an unhappy one; his reports were routinely red-pencilled almost to oblivion as government apparatchiks sought to nullify news of defeat.
Series 1: The War of Words
Jonathan Dimbleby presents a documentary examining the role of the BBC during the Second World War, examining the fledgling corporation's vital role in boosting morale at home and struggles to avoid a complete government takeover. The events of the war years would come to define the BBC as an international broadcaster, transmitting in 47 languages.

Series 2. Into Battle
The conclusion of the two-part documentary examines the impact the BBC's broadcasts had on the war zone. Jonathan Dimbleby looks at how it provided a counterpoint to Nazi propaganda and a source of coded information for resistance groups. He also discusses how BBC correspondents were embedded with military units during D-Day, and recalls his own father's reporting on the liberation of Belsen and the fall of Berlin.
