Gabriel Shear, criminel d'envergure qui prétend oeuvrer pour le bien de l'Amérique, a investi une banque avec ses hommes et menace d'exécuter ses otages si les forces de l'ordre tentent d'intervenir… Quatre jours plus tôt. Condamné pour avoir piraté le système informatique du F.B.I., Stanley Jobson, hacker de génie qui n'a aujourd'hui plus le droit d'approcher un ordinateur, reçoit la visite de la sculpturale Ginger Knowles, qui lui offre 100 000 dollars rien que pour rencontrer Shear. Ce dernier compte sur ses talents pour briser des codes informatiques qui le rendront multimilliardaire. Il lui fait miroiter en échange une énorme prime, qui l'aidera à obtenir la garde de sa fille chérie…

There exists a world within our world. A world beneath what we call cyberspace. A world protected by firewalls, passwords and the most advanced security systems. In this world we hide our deepest secrets, our most incriminating information, and of course, a whole lot of money. This is the world of Swordfish. Gabriel Shear (JOHN TRAVOLTA), a charismatic and dangerous spy wanting to finance his own brand of patriotism, needs to get inside this world. If he can get in, billions in illegal government funds wait for the taking. To actually steal the money, however, he'll need a superhacker, someone whose talents make even the most airtight security systems of the world look like child's play.
