The two are from opposite ends of the social spectrum: Lynley is an earl, though he keeps quiet about it, while Havers is almost aggressively working class. While that causes friction and misunderstandings between them, it also means they see things differently and complement one another in their police work.

When the schoolboy is found murdered, Lynley is well placed to understand the tensions of this closed society, which reminds him of his own boyhood. Meanwhile, Havers has problems with her senile mother and Lynley with his love life.
