A dramatic, psychological, black-humoured satire on corruption in high office, telling the story of a top police officer - a chief of detectives, homicide section - who kills his mistress and then tests whether the police would charge him for this crime. During the movie, he is seen leaving clues to prove his own responsibility for the crime while the other police officers ignore them, either intentionally or not.

An excellent look into the mind of a murderer, the film features an incredible performance from Gian Maria Volonte in one of his most celebrated roles as the idiosyncratic, nervous police inspector, portraying an authoritarian Italian police functionary.
Director Elio Petri has made an anti-fascist statement that is both pointed and poignant, full of eerie, unsettling moods abetted by Ennio Morricone's excellent score. A piercing satire of Italian investigative techniques, and an interesting meditation on the relationship between class and guilt.
