Blade Runner Director's Cut (1982)

In a rainy and overcrowded Los Angeles, the policeman Deckard (Harrison Ford), Blade Runner unit, is called into service. His specialty is the removal of unruly specimens of "replicants," androids designed to work in space colonies. Four of them, Roy Batty, Leon, Pris and Zora have reached the Earth groped to infiltrate industries that produce them. The replicants are identical to humans, except for the limited duration of their existence and the apparent inability to feel. Just on the registration of emotional reactions is based on Voigt test - Kampff, which identifies in Deckard Rachel (Sean Young), who worked with industrialist, an experimental replicant, unaware of their true nature. Deckard puts you on the trail of surrogates to "withdraw," Zora removing from the first stripper (Joanna Cassidy). However, it is to save Rachel Leon, while Pres (Daryl Hannah) is installed at the home of a researcher to convince him to bring her and Batty (Rutger Hauer) industrialist. The meeting has no happy ending: the two replicants learn that there is no way to prolong their existence. Deckard reaches them in their hiding place, and "withdrawn" Pris, Batty confronts a ruthless duel. Saved in extremis by his own opponent for a moment before they die, Deckard Rachel recovers and escapes with her from the city. Skillful fusion of detective and science fiction, Blade Runner lives a symbiotic relationship with the hunter of androids, the novel by Philip K. Dick from which it is drawn. Although the film is more coherent and balanced, some references are appreciated only by reading the book: the details of the test or the description of a world where artificial reproduction of animals, almost extinct, become a status symbol. However, the film perfectly describes a multi-ethnic society and perfectly portrays the different characters, all imbued with bitterness typical of Dick: suffering from premature aging by the scientist who lives in a house full of toys for those suffering from existential anxieties surrogates, from fragile and sensual Rachel struggling with their identity unknown to the Forties detective transferred to the future. Equally effective are the special effects by Douglas Trumbull and the soundtrack by Vangelis. Blade Runner quickly became a cult movie, which allowed a year after Ridley Scott to distribute the "original" version (Blade Runner: The Director's Cut). Less optimistic note in the final of the public, it has no off-screen narration of the protagonist and the final aerial, adding to the will of the manufacturer, using cuttings of the opening sequence of The Shining.

I replicanti sono identici agli esseri umani, tranne che per la durata limitata della loro esistenza e per l'apparente incapacità di provare sentimenti. Proprio sulla registrazione delle reazioni emotive si basa il test Voigt - Kampff, con cui Deckard indentifica in Rachel (Sean Young), collaboratrice dell'industriale, una replicante sperimentale, inconsapevole della propria vera natura. Deckard si pone sulle tracce di replicanti da "ritirare", eliminando per prima la spogliarellista Zora (Joanna Cassidy). È però Rachel a salvarlo da Leon, mentre Pres (Daryl Hannah) si installa a casa di un ricercatore per convincerlo a portare lei e Batty (Rutger Hauer) dall'industriale. L'incontro non ha esito felice: i due replicanti apprendono che non c'è modo di prolungare la loro esistenza. Deckard li raggiunge nel loro nascondiglio e, "ritirata" Pris, affronta Batty in un duello spietato. Salvato in extremis dal suo stesso avversario un attimo prima che questi muoia, Deckard recupera Rachel e fugge con lei lontano dalla città. Abile fusione di poliziesco e fantascienza, Blade Runner vive un rapporto di simbiosi con Il cacciatore di androidi, romanzo di Philip K. Dick da cui è tratto. Anche se il film risulta più coerente ed equilibrato, alcuni riferimenti sono apprezzabili solo leggendo il libro: i dettagli del test o la descrizione di un mondo in cui le riproduzioni artificiali degli animali, quasi estinti, diventano status symbol. Tuttavia il film descrive perfettamente una società multietnica e tratteggia perfettamente i diversi personaggi, tutti pervasi dall'amarezza tipica dell'opera di Dick: dallo scienziato colpito da invecchiamento precoce che vive in una casa piena di giocattoli, ai replicanti afflitti da angosce esistenziali, dalla fragile e sensuale Rachel alle prese con la propria identità sconosciuta al detective anni Quaranta trasferito nel futuro. Altrettanto efficaci sono gli effetti speciali di Douglas Trumbull e la colonna sonora di Vangelis. Blade Runner divenne rapidamente un cult-movie, cosa che anni dopo permise a Ridley Scott di distribuirne la versione "originale" ( Blade Runner: the Director's Cut). Meno ottimistica nel finale dell'edizione nota al pubblico, essa è priva della narrazione fuori campo del protagonista e della ripresa aerea conclusiva, aggiunta per volontà del produttore, utilizzando ritagli della sequenza iniziale di Shining.
