1974. Il capitano Walton, in rotta per il Polo Nord, incontra sulla banchisa un uomo allo stremo: è Victor Frankenstein, scienziato svizzero, che gli narra la sua storia, come abbia trascorso un'infanzia felice a Ginevra, interrotta dalla perdita della madre, morta nel dare alla luce il fratellino William. Innamorato della sua sorella adottiva Elizabeth, che lo ricambia, Victor si reca a Ingolstadt alla facoltà di medicina dove fa amicizia col collega Henry Clerval e col vecchio docente Waldman, che tenta invano di dissuaderlo dall'obiettivo che lui stesso ha già sfiorato: la creazione di un essere vivente. L'assassinio di Waldman ad opera di un contadino fa sì che Frankenstein costituisca la sua "creatura" col cervello del professore e parti di cadaveri tra cui quello del suo uccisore. Il mostro che ne scaturisce provoca orrore nello scienziato, che ripudia la sua "creatura" la quale braccata dalla folla fugge nella foresta, dove si nasconde presso una fattoria. Qui impara a parlare e leggere di nascosto. Ma viene scoperto e respinto, e grazie al diario di Victor, che ha sottratto, raggiunge Ginevra ed uccide il piccolo William. Del fatto viene incolpata Justine, la figlia della governante, che viene impiccata dalla folla. La "creatura" chiede ora a Victor una compagna, ma sceglie il cadavere di Justine come materiale, e Victor rifiuta, e tenta di sottrarsi al controllo della "creatura" sposando Elizabeth, che lo ama da sempre. Ma la prima notte di nozze il mostro estirpa il cuore della donna. Victor allora la riporta in vita, ma la donna, ridotta ad una larva, e contesa tra i due uomini, si dà fuoco. Lo scienziato dà allora la caccia al mostro seguendolo verso i ghiacci del Nord, dove incontra Walton. Alla fine del suo racconto Victor muore, ed il mostro, sopraggiunto, prima lo piange, e poi si dà fuoco sulla sua pira funebre, mentre i ghiacci si rompono e la nave ritorna verso il sud.

Storyline
In 1794, in the Arctic Sea, Captain Robert Walton is a man obsessed to reach the North Pole, pushing his crew to exhaustion. When his ship hits an iceberg, it is stranded in the ice. Out of the blue, Captain Walton and his men overhear a dreadful cry and they see a stranger coming to the ship. He introduces himself and Victor Frankenstein and he tells to the captain the story of his life since he was a little boy in Geneva. Victor is a brilliant student and in love with his stepsister Elizabeth, an orphan that was raised by his father Baron Frankenstein. In 1793, Victor moves to Ingolstadt to study at the university and he promises to get married to Elizabeth. At the university, Victor befriends Henry Clerval who becomes his best friend. Victor gets close to Professor Waldman and decides to create life to cheat death, but Waldman advises him that he should not try this experiment since the result would be an abomination.
