La Città Proibita (2006)

Cina, tarda dinastia Tang, decimo secolo. Alla vigilia delle festività del Chong Yang, dei fiori dorati riempiono il palazzo imperiale. L’imperatore (Chow Yun Fat) ritorna inaspettatamente a casa assieme al suo secondogenito, il principe Jai (Jay Chou). La ragione ufficiale è quella di celebrare le festività con la sua famiglia, ma considerando i rapporti freddi che intercorrono tra lui e la sofferente imperatrice (Gong Li), questa sembra soltanto una scusa. Per molti anni, l’imperatrice e il principe ereditario Wan (Liu Ye), il suo figliastro, hanno avuto una relazione sentimentale. Sentendosi in trappola, il principe Wan sogna di scappare dal palazzo con il suo amore segreto Chan (Li Man), la figlia del dottore imperiale. Nel frattempo, il principe Jai, fedele al padre, è sempre più preoccupato per la salute dell’imperatrice e per la sua ossessione legata al crisantemo dorato. E’ possibile che la donna stia scivolando verso un tragico destino? Anche l’imperatore nasconde dei piani segreti e il dottore imperiale è l’unico a conoscenza delle sue macchinazioni. Quando l’imperatore avverte il profilarsi di una minaccia, trasferisce la famiglia del dottore dal palazzo in un’area remota. Mentre sono in viaggio, dei misteriosi assassini li attaccano. Chan e sua madre, Jiang Shi (Chen Jin), sono costrette a rifugiarsi a palazzo e il loro ritorno scatena una serie di rivelazioni sconvolgenti.

The Emperor (Chow Yun Fat) returns unexpectedly with his second son, Prince Jai (Jay Chou). His pretext is to celebrate the holiday with his family, but given the chilled relations between the Emperor and the ailing Empress (Gong Li), this seems disingenuous. For many years, the Empress and Crown Prince Wan (Liu Ye), her stepson, have had an illicit liaison. Feeling trapped, Prince Wan dreams of escaping the palace with his secret love Chan (Li Man), the Imperial Doctor's daughter. Meanwhile, Prince Jai, the faithful son, grows worried over the Empress's health and her obsession with golden chrysanthemums. Could she be headed down an ominous path? The Emperor harbors equally clandestine plans; the Imperial Doctor (Ni Dahong) is the only one privy to his machinations…
