Hardened criminal Michael Bosworth (Mickey Rourke) escapes from a courthouse jail with a gun slipped to him by his attorney, Nancy Breyers (Kelly Lynch). To avoid a police manhunt, Bosworth chooses a Utah home at random and holds a family hostage, hiding out with his brother (Elias Koteas) and another fugitive (David Morse). The home belongs to Tim Cornell (Anthony Hopkins). He and his wife Nora (Mimi Rogers) are on the verge of a separation, which upsets their two children. Cornell is trying to win back her affection when the violent home invaders come into their lives.
Criminel violent et instable, Michael Bosworth s'échappe du tribunal où il était jugé pour meurtre. En attendant l'arrivée de sa maîtresse, Michael et ses complices pénètrent dans la maison de Tim et Nora Cornell et prennent la famille en otage. Mais les choses dégénèrent et Michael entre dans une rage meurtrière et incontrôlable…
