The desperate survivors of a devastating zombie plague race across the country to seek sanctuary on the island of Catalina in this apocalyptic shocker starring Ving Rhames, Taryn Manning, and Eddie Steeples.

IMDB

After a plague has turned 90% of America into mindless zombie killers, a ragtag group of refuges find themselves fighting their way across the country looking to seek refuge on the island of Catalina. Along the way they will have to evade, deceive and at times overpower the zombies that are hunting their flesh. They'll also have a few surprises in store as this is not your average zombie apocalypse…

Here we've got another zombie apocalypse movie made for the Syfy channel by The Asylum. The Asylum usually pump out two bit knock off's of popular A-list movies looking to cash in on their popularity. They are to movies what remores are to sharks, almost every Asylum movie i've seen has been garbage. I guess somewhere along the line the trend had to be bucked.

Zombie Apocalypse is actually a very solid horror flick in many ways. Whilst there are some very unbelievable things going on, we can easy let them off the hook, since after all this is a zombie apocalypse and they don't happen every day. The movie's characters are a bit cliched, stereotypical though they serve well. Ving Rhames (who seems to be in quite a few zombie movies these days) plays what is arguably the troupe's leader. His character carries a sledgehammer and is not afraid to use it! Ving brings a good physical presence to the movie with a strong 'don't fuck with me' atmosphere, without a doubt his character is the standout persona. The rest of the characters are OK but nothing really memorable truth be told.

The movie's gore level is really high, though a lot of it is done via CGI which doesn't look at all believable but regardless it's still quite fun. Zombie Apocalypse isn't really that scary either, though it has it's tense moments.

It's tough to explain without divulging spoilers but this movie rocks the boat a little when it comes to 'zombieness'. Some of the zombies aren't your typical slow or even fast running variants. Some purists will no doubt have issues with this, though i don't so long as the idea is good. The ending i thought took things a bit far but others may disagree.

Overall i'd say this is the best Asylum movie i've yet seen, it'd be nice to think this is the start of a new way forward for them but that would probably be naive. This movie is fully recommended however!
