Nachdem sie bereits seit längerer Zeit versucht, Arbeit zu finden, verliert Kyra (Michelle Pfeiffer) schließlich auch noch ihre Mutter – damit wird ihr Leben endgültig aus der Bahn geworfen. Während sich ihre Schulden häufen, kämpft die Frau Tag ein, Tag aus ums Überleben und verliert dabei auch Stück für Stück den Glauben an sich selbst. Sie zieht sich immer mehr zurück, vernachlässigt soziale Kontakte und führt ein Leben, das immer mehr von Isolation geprägt wird. Doch auch wenn sie ihre verstorbene Mutter vermisst, sammelt sie noch einmal all ihre Kräfte, um die bevorstehende Zwangsräumung doch noch irgendwie zu verhindern. Hoffnung gibt ihr auch der alleinstehende Doug (Kiefer Sutherland), der ein ähnlich einsames Dasein fristet und Kyra in dieser schweren Zeit zur Seite steht. Aus Angst, ihre neue Bekanntschaft zu vergraulen, beschließt Kyra allerdings, Doug nichts von ihrer misslichen Lage zu erzählen – und gefährdet ihr Beziehung damit umso mehr.
