Tribute to a Bad Man is a 1956 western film starring James Cagney about a rancher whose harsh enforcement of frontier justice alienates the woman he loves. It was directed by Robert Wise and based on the short story "Hanging's for the Lucky" by Jack Schaefer.

James Cagney plays the man with a heart of stone in this rather fine and entertaining movie. Cagney (as Mr. Rodock) is the foreman on the ranch, which the film is about, in the middle of nowhere.

One sunny day Cagney is out trying to defend his horses against horse thieves. His horse is down and as he takes cover Don Dubbins (as Steve Millar) comes to help, and the story has begun.

Never seen Don Dubbins anywhere before but he reminds me of a young Christopher Walken at times. This was his first real film (he had appeared uncredited in the two earlier), and personally I believe he should get credit for the way he played his role.

This is an interesting western I reckon. Nice shots of the American nature without any desperate fast cuts that disrupt the viewing.

I liked it. James Cagney was great as the 'bad' foreman and I liked the plot. I can recommend this not only to all Cagney fans but to everyone who likes a good classic western.
