Ken Burns, the premiere documentarian of Americana, tackles the life of Mark Twain, the first writer with a uniquely American voice. In this installment in Burns' "American Lives" series, the two 2-hour episodes explore a side of Twain that is unfamiliar to many. Widely regarded as the funniest person of the 19th century, Twain suffered through severe personal tragedies and lack of business sense that brought him to the brink of financial ruin on several occasions. Includes interviews with writers William Styron and Arthur Miller and actor Hal Holbrook (who has portrayed Twain in a one-man play each year for over 50 years).
This has to be one of the best documentaries on a literary figure that has ever been made. In the hands of Ken Burns, the richness and subtlety, the humour and tragedy, the successes and dismal failures and a true sustained analysis of the life of Samuel Clemens all combines to give us a personal and intellectual understanding of this towering literary icon of the 19th century. Twain was many things - a riverboat pilot, printer, journalist, miner, speculator, failed business man, and satirist, but most of all a novelist, a grand storyteller that spoke to royalty, presidents as well as the common people.
Ernest Hemingway once said that American literature began with the publication of Huckleberry Finn. Twain chose to write this book in the language of the vernacular, while other writers maintained an allegiance to English prose, Huck Finn's voice rose above conformity, informing the American public that the black American was not just a commodity, an object of scorn and prejudice, but a human being. This book not only changed our views on literature but our humanity as well. This film does not skim over the surface of Twain's life and work, but digs deeper into his motivations and inspirations in the context of his environment.
~Mark Twain~ took almost three years to produce, which includes hundreds of photographs, actual film footage of the man at home, informed interviews with Twain scholars and writers that give us keen insights into his life and work. What this film shows is that not only is his literature extraordinary, but his life as well. And this life is told mainly through the words of the man himself. Twain lived a dual persona, the man and the celebrity. As another writer has said, this dual persona came to symbolize the emerging American conflict between down-to-earth-morality and freewheeling ambition.
Twain lived an extravagant life though hated everything that this represented. He was the author of the Gilded Age, a scathing satire on the post civil war period in which the country prospered and money was worshiped above all things, yet his wealth and lifestyle emulated that very thing he was satirizing. He claimed that he wasn't American, but `the' American. He was a man of genius and contradictions but above all, human, a man who showed us through his work, with a sly wink, that we're all human and essentially in the same boat.
This film is undoubtedly one of the best portraits of Mark Twain ever to be done. After watching the film in its entirety, I was hard pressed to find any genuine criticisms, other than minor quibbles and therefore not worth mentioning. If this sounds like unqualified praise for ~Mark Twain~, it is.Customer Review, amazon.com
When it comes to literary icons, few can match a simple steamboat pilot from Hannibal, Missouri named Samuel Clemens. He is revered as a man of morality, humor and imagination–but no matter how fantastic his stories are, they rarely match the drama and intensity that occurred during his own lifetime. In this epic 4 hour film, master documentarian Ken Burns tells the story of a man we humbly know as Mark Twain.
Born under Haley’s Comet in 1835, Samuel Clemens was the sixth of his family’s seven children to grow up in the slave state of Missouri. At the age of 11, his father died, leaving Clemens and his brother in charge of a massive family. As he grew he moved from job to job until Clemens found a passion for steamboat piloting. As if one life passion wasn’t enough, he discovered that writing also brought him great pleasure, and he began a career that lasted five decades. He soon changed his name to Mark Twain. During his many years of creative brilliance, Twain wrote classics such as Huckleberry Finn, The Adventures of Tom Sawyer and Life on The Mississippi. Even though his stories brought joy to millions, his life was marred by tragedy after tragedy and when Twain’s time on earth ended, his death became even more poetic than anything he could have possibly written.
For any fan of Ken Burns, this film is a complete knockout. He pulls out all the stops to tell the story of this American icon. With an authoritative, yet plainspoken narration by Keith David and a powerful performance by Kevin Conway as the voice of Twain, this film lets viewers hear Twain as if he were standing right next to them . Through interviews with notable historians and fans of Twain, his triumphs and tragedies are accentuated to the point that it leaves you in tears. Though there is a small amount of motion picture footage of Twain during his later years, Burns incorporates hundreds of photos to tell his story. The film is painstakingly researched for accuracy and Burns’ mission to tell viewers everything they need to know is evident from the start.
Some may quickly say that four hours is far too long for a documentary, but when one looks at the scope of Twain’s life they realize that the film could easily be ten hours. Though Ken Burns never seems to change his style, his films never get boring. If you have a love of history, a love of Twain, or simply feel like watching a beautiful film, Mark Twain is the film for you.
