Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels (1998)

British writer Guy Ritchie made his feature directorial debut with this crime-caper comedy-drama set in London's East End and heavy on the Cockney dialogue (with one scene in subtitled Cockney rhyming slang). A big-bucks scheme goes awry: Cardsharp Eddy (Nick Moran) and pals Bacon (Jason Statham), Tom (Jason Flemyng), and Soap (Dexter Fletcher) scuffle to pile up enough money to put Eddy at the card table opposite gangland porn lord Hatchet Harry (P.H. Moriarty). Unfortunately, the whole plan backfires, leaving Eddy owing Harry a huge sum, payable within the week. In truth, Harry hopes to acquire the bar run by his rival, J.D. (Sting), who is Eddy's father. To raise the cash, Eddy sets out to steal from a marijuana business run by Winston (Steven Mackintosh), but the inevitable gunplay doesn't make for an easy heist. Before Guy Ritchie became famous for marrying Madonna, he crossed the pond in a big way with this visually stunning, brutally exciting and viciously funny flick. The film begins with a high stakes card game that Eddy (Moran), carrying the life savings of his three closest friends, believes he can't lose. Unfortunately for him, he does just that, not due to lack of talent, but because underworld boss "Hatchett" Harry is cheating…and you don't call out Harry if you want to keep on breathing. To pay off the debt, Harry forces the lads to come up with half a million dollars within one week or they'll start losing body parts. Things get pretty crazy from here with the boys on one side, planning a caper that will rid them of the dept, and Harry and his henchman on the other, working their own little schemes and deals. Death and mayhem ensue with the outcome unsure who will win out and still be standing in the end. Well, not really, but how the matter gets settled is one of the most complicated and amusing plot twists I have ever seen. This is a roller coaster ride that depends as much on the talent of its' actors as it does on the unique look and feel of the art direction and editing. Though Ritchie has it cranked up to 11 most of the time, the characters are well-developed, never falling into caricature or blandness. Despite the fireworks and almost constant mayhem, they are what make this film endearing and original. A stylish and entertaining response to the usual crime story.

Crazy4Cinema

Writer-director Guy Ritchie's Lock, Stock, and Two Smoking Barrels is an extraordinarily stylish crime comedy set in London. Most of the characters have thick Cockney accents and clever if harsh dialogue. Ritchie's story has quite the sense of humor about itself: as a cast of dozens of shady characters – everything from petty thieves to loan sharks to big mean crime bosses – try to get money or pay money or contract jobs or execute jobs or exact revenge, hilarious cosmic coincidences tangle their paths in a knot. The end is beautiful.

At-A-Glance Film Reviews

After watching this modern age British film noir, two things become apparently clear. One, writer/director Guy Ritchie is a wonderfully innovative cinematographer, breathing life back into the pop-culture gangster flick. And two, "Pulp Fiction" was not the pinnacle of the ladder. To put it simply, the movie is awesome in both the visual and literary sense. Lock Stock is more than just a clever mix of comedy, violence and character development. There is an underlying realism to the storyline that draws the viewer in.

Set against the backdrop of Londons notorious Lower East End the movie follows the paths of four friends who are seduced by the lure of a "get rich quick scheme." The main character, a card shark named Eddie, looses five hundred thousand pounds (roughly a million dollars) to local mobster and porn king "Hatchet Harry". They have seven days to pay the full ammount before they each begin loosing vital parts of their anatomy. Nothing new so far, right? Wrong. The beauty of the film lies within the development of the various villans whom the main characters encounter during their struggle to raise the cash.

There is an especially memorable performance by former soccer player Vinnie Jones, who plays the role of a badass money collector and loving father. Inevitably, the antics of Eddy and his friends forms the catalyst for an explosive gang war that culminates at the movies climax. Now, it is unfair to compare this movie to others of the same genre, notably the Tarintino cult-films like "Pulp Fiction" and "Resivoir Dogs" that have become the staple flicks of this particular genre. In fact, I actually found Lock Stock to be more satisfying in some respects. Lock Stock has one quality that, up to now, has been unpossessed by many pop-culture films. That quality is realism.

Having lived in the United Kingdom for five years, I have come to recognize those characters well. In fact, Guy Ritchie actually hired ex-cons to play the roles of his fiendish villans, rather than hire the more famous character actors. Now that takes guts. In any case, the only problems I can forsee as far as the american viewing audience goes is the heavily accent laiden dialogue and cockney slang that is often spouted off by the characters. After a few minutes though, you should easily be able to pick up the pace.

A fascinating combination of visual style, hard edge violence, and comedy. If the new age gangster films interest you, I would reccommend Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrels, any day of the week. Watch it.
