A tale told over four seasons, starting in autumn when Juno, a 16-year-old high-school junior in Minnesota, discovers she's pregnant after one event in a chair with her best friend, Bleeker. In the waiting room of an abortion clinic, the quirky and whip-sharp Juno decides to give birth and to place the child with an adoptive couple. She finds one in the PennySaver personals, contacts them, tells her dad and step-mother, and carries on with school. The chosen parents, upscale yuppies (one of whom is cool and laid back, the other meticulous and uptight), meet Juno, sign papers, and the year unfolds. Will Juno's plan work, can she improvise, and what about Bleeker?

An IMDb Review: A Colorful, Fresh, and Brilliant Indy Gem that Never Goes Overboard:
The concept behind a quirk is that it is a small aspect of a character; just a minute detail about their person, a subtle sign of one's individuality. It's not a character's defining persona; the only element behind one's personality. Which is where many independent comedies (cough, "Little Miss Sunshine") go wrong: they turn characters into caricatures; unbelievable eccentric beings defined by pet peeves.

"Juno" however is a marvelous exception: an offbeat comedy not defined by eccentric character qualities nor propelled by over-the-top antics. It's just a perfect mix of what is unique and original, witty and observant, plus warm while serious.

The script is perhaps the most winning factor in this film: packed with sharp, eclectic dialogue that fizzes with delight and provides an overdose of clever, quotable remarks (more than Tarantino could even lay claim to). It's fresh and intelligent, but the humor (this film is an absolute riot) never forgets the movie's subject matter and how deadly serious it can become. Scenes of marital struggles particularly remind the viewer of the situation we're witnessing, and emotional impact is always present. The story can perhaps even be seen as a relevant one (though I can't honestly say there's a message being sent out here): an individual, free-thinking young woman still in high school becomes unexpectedly pregnant and after choosing to not abort the unborn infant, decides to give her baby to two adoptive parents who may not after all be ready for parenthood.

A great majority of the film's delight also stems from its rich and perfect cast. Michael Cera (hilariously accentuated in track shorts) is dry but likable as the meek, soft-spoken teenage father. J.K Simmons is great as Juno's (the center character) father, as are the two actresses whom I cannot name who play Juno's stepmother and best friend, and equally excellent are the adoptive parents: played by Jenifer Garner (a sympathetically nervous performance) and Jason Bateman (a man whose so laid back you know he has issues). But of course the real winner is Ellen Page. Not many genuinely great female roles are viewable these days, but Page's Juno is a feminine icon for the ages. Fast-speaking, individual, cultured Juno is made such a charming portrayal by Page its impossible not to like her. She embodies the performance so well and with such dead on comedic timing it may be the single most memorable performance of the year.

Indeed the film is among this year's best: an instant classic of infinite wisdom and wit, made so entertaining and enjoyable you have to be made of stone not to smile at it. 10/10
