Six days in the life of Wilhelm: a detached man without qualities. Bonn, a castle on the Rhine, a neighborhood on the outskirts of Frankfurt and finally Zugspitze are the stage in a journey that will free Wilhelm from the gloominess and from the discouragement oppressing him in his home town. He believes that it is only by moving away from his mother that he can satisfy his yearning to be a writer. On the train he meets an older man, an athlete in the 1936 Olympics, who is still struggling within himself against the ghosts of his Nazi past and his mute teen companion, Mignon, an acrobat. An actress, Therese, whom Wilhelm gazes at, joins them and he makes friends with a young vagabond poet, Bernhard Landau.

Second part of Wenders' "Road Movie Trilogy" which included Alice in den Städten (Alice in the Cities) (1974) and Im Lauf der Zeit (Kings of the Road) (1976).
