Part fairy tale, part melodrama, part horror film, German director Rainer Werner Fassbinder's hypnotic Veronika Voss tells the story of a former movie star with questionable ties to the Nazi regime, whose addiction to morphine has drawn her into the hands of a controlling psychiatrist. An encounter with a sportswriter on a rainy night leads to a brief affair, after which he becomes obsessed with the unstable Voss. He tries to investigate her plight, but his efforts lead to disaster. Veronika Voss aspires to outdo Sunset Boulevard as a portrait of the corrosive powers of fame and illusions–and it almost succeeds. Beautifully photographed in sumptuous black and white and edited like a symphony, Veronika Voss unfolds like a roll of silk laced with poison.
