Serpico is a cop in the early 1970s. Unlike all his colleagues, he refuses a share of the money that the cops routinely extort from local criminals. Nobody wants to work with Serpico, and he's in constant danger of being placed in life threatening positions by his "partners". Nothing seems to get done even when he goes to the highest of authorities. Despite the dangers he finds himself in, he still refuses to 'go with the flow', in the hope that one day, the truth will be known.

In 1970, police officer Frank Serpico electrified the Knapp Commission investigating the New York City Police Department by testifying that there were as many cops taking payoffs as there were crooks. Peter Maas's biography of Serpico formed the basis of the script by Waldo Salt (MIDNIGHT COWBOY) and Norman Wexler (SATURDAY NIGHT FEVER), and Al Pacino is the title character, an honest cop who refuses to go on the take.

Surrounded by corruption, Frank Serpico is distrusted and harrassed by fellow officers, who suspect him both for his honesty and for his countercultural lifestyle. When the double-dealing and persecution become too much, he tries to inform police commissioner White of the corruption within the department, but the response is discouraging. Frustrated, Serpico takes his story to the New York Times editors; the resultant scandal prompts the mayor to initiate a high-profile investigation. Serpico is called to testify, and now both cops and criminals are gunning for him.

All of the actors contribute excellent performances under the assured direction of Sidney Lumet, who replaced John Avildsen on the project. It's a particular pleasure to see Tony Roberts working in a film that wasn't directed by Woody Allen, and he is outstanding as Pacino's trusted pal. Oscar-winner F. Murray Abraham (AMADEUS), Mary Louise Weller (ANIMAL HOUSE), M. Emmet Walsh (STRAIGHT TIME), and Hank Garrett (THREE DAYS OF THE CONDOR) also appear in small but telling roles. But when all is said and done, Pacino is the riveting presence that makes the movie work and it is difficult to imagine any other actor in the part.

Al Pacino is one of the best actors around, and he has many definitive roles. His role as Frank Serpico is certainly one of them. He acts with such charm and smoothness in some scenes, while explosive and intense in others.

The movie gets into a big plot line about police corruption and Serpico blowing the whistle on the department. It's interesting and the whole point of the movie, but the reason this is such a good movie is because of the character, not the plot. The better scenes include Serpico's personal life and struggles. There's one great part where he explains to his girlfriend why he's always wanted to be a cop. It's scenes like those that make you sympathetic for him.

Sidney Lumet and Pacino made a great team for this movie, and proved to be a great team for Dog Day Afternoon a few years later. But as good as a director Lumet is, as good as everyone involved with this movie is, this is Pacino's movie. It's an essential viewing for his fans.

The great Sidney Lumet was a New York City director through and through. By the time he made "Serpico" in 1973 (his 20th film) in 1973 he had performed on the Broadway stage as a child actor, directed Ooff -Broadway plays, and won enormous acclaim for his debut film "12 Angry Men" in (1957). Justice was an ongoing theme for Lumet. Films like such as "Dog Day Afternoon," "Network," and "The Verdict" are significant touchstones. Famously as an actor's director, Lumet was also one of the most prolific filmmakers of the 20th century. He made, making more than 50 films during his career.

"Serpico" finds features Al Pacino's impeccabley embodying portrayal of honest New York City undercover cop Frank Serpico, a real-life hero whose experiences withcrusade against widespread police department corruption eventually led to him beinggot him shot in the face by his fellow officers. Pacino employs to the fullest every aspect detail of period costume, prop, and make-up design in developing his character's morphing psychology. The His tour de force performance as a tireless idealist is as close to perfect as you will ever see.

Screenwriter Waldo Salt's contributions to the film's naturalistic dialogue is constantly on display. Part intensive character study and part corrective social medicine, the story obsessively follows Serpico as he anxiously attempts to bring about a full- scale investigation into the corruption that baits him at every police precinct he transfers to. He gets receives impotent assistance from "good -guy" police detective Bob Blair (played by Tony Roberts). whose Blair's escalating efforts to help only put Serpico under the bright florescent light of his many enemies. "Serpico" is a candid and gritty police exposée film that juxtaposes systematic police graft with the personal toll it takes on the man who attempts to blow the lid on the crooked activities that surround him.
