Monzo Kobayashi is a dime-novel writer. He goes to see the stage of Ranko Mizuki, a star of an all-girls'-operetta company known as Asakusa Revue. Monzo notices a creepy man sitting beside him who keeps his head slumped down and does not even look up when Ranko appears on stage. On the way home from the theater, Monzo encounters another creepy situation. A dwarf (inch-high samurai) with a child-sized body and a grown-up's head passes right by him and is carrying a woman's arm that has been sliced off from the shoulder. Being a writer, this strangely enhances his interest of this dwarf and he begins an investigation about dwarfs. At the same time, his old friend Yurie visits him. Monzo secretly has a crush on her but knows that she is married to some one else. Yurie asks Monzo to introduce her to his friend, the detective, Kogoro Akechi. Monzo agrees to this and takes her to Akechi's apartment…

Blind Beast vs. Killer Dwarf was cult movie director, Teruo Ishii's final film. The plot consists of two separate but intertwined stories. In one story, Lily Franky plays Monzo Kobayashi, a dime-store mystery novelist who decides to follow a dwarf home after watching a cabaret show. While following him, Monzo notices that the dwarf is carrying the severed arm of a woman. Monzo brings this to the attention of his detective friend, Kogoro Akechi, played by Japanese auteur director, Shinya Tsukamoto. The story that makes up the other half of the plot is about Ranko Mizuki, a dancer in the cabaret show that Monzo was watching. Ms. Mizuki is being stalked by, and eventually gets kidnapped by a blind man known only as the Blind Beast. While being held captive, Mizuki is subjected to various forms of sexual degradation and torture. Surprisingly, Mizuki finds this treatment endearing and starts to fall for the Blind Beast. Detective Akechi's character serves as the link between these two stories, as he is currently investigating both cases.

Rather than focus on composition and visual appeal, Ishii has done the opposite, trapping the viewer in claustrophobic spaces with disgusting or shocking images. Hisayoshi Hirayama in particular is positively repellent as the Blind Beast – his wet lips, hairy hands, stained teeth, sleazy moustache, cadaverous body, and searching hands evoke nothing so much as a quivering, naked mole-rat. Ishii also creates a unifying visual theme of body parts – victims are dismembered and their limbs left around town (one is sent aloft attached to children’s balloons!), his studio walls are covered with disembodied plaster extremities, and the Dwarf hides out in his brother’s mannequin workshop. Ishii rounds out the grotesque with the erotic – he’s never shied away from exploiting the female body. Here, he has cast the film largely with unknowns willing to shed their clothes as necessary – as Roger Corman used to say, nudity is the cheapest special effect…

Recommended? Yes, to connoisseurs of Taisho era “ero-guro nonsense,” and fans of radical, fringe filmmaking in general, though BBKVD is certainly not for the average filmgoer.
