In this first part of the Angélique cycle, set in Mid-17th century France under the young Sun King Louis XIV, still struggling for his throne, while beggars and brigands roam the country, Angélique de Sancé de Monteloup, fifth child of an impoverished country nobleman in the Poitou marshlands, expected to struggle for a meager subsistence, educated in a nunnery, is betrothed at 17 to Joffrey de Peyrac, the 12 years older rich but cripple Comte de (count of) Peyrac de Morens and seigneur (Lord) of Toulouse, scarred in the face and said to be a sorcerer, in fact practicing oriental mining techniques which make his vast fortune. After the death of her Joffrey husband on roughing-hew it, Angelique lives from now on with Calembredaine with Court of the miracles. And after having recovered its sons, Angelique is well decided to find its row at the court and to be avenged for those which caused its loss.

Grace with its marriage with his/her cousin Philippe, Angelique finds his place at the Court. But Philippe dies in the war of Flandres. The king then gives him a mission, that to allure the ambassador of Persia for the signature of a treaty with France, in exchange to allow him to find goods having belonged to Joffrey.

In France under the reign of Louis XIV : Angelica discovers that her husband, Joffrey de Peyrac, are in Sardinia. In company of its faithful alchemist Savary, it decides to join it on the island, but the sailing ship is attacked by pirates. It is thrown to the sea to be then fished out by another boat; it is then brought to the market of the slaves where an envoy of her husband repurchases it. But their happiness lasts little because, while Joffrey runs to save his boat in flames, Angelique is seen once again removed by pirates.

Angelica was removed, in spite of the efforts of Peyrac. It must be sold like slave to the king of Morocco. Peyrac, afterwards many adventures, fails in his/her friend the ambassador of Turkey. It proposes to the king of Morocco the exchange of a secrecy against his wife, but this one already managed to escape…
