Toolchefs has unveiled Atoms Crowd 3.6.0, the next version of its software-agnostic crowd animation system, adding new features such as Animation Retargeting, Multi Layout, Variation Modifier and much more.

This version of Atoms Crowd contains the following bug fixes and improvements.

Features and improvements:
- Added a new real time skeleton retargeting system.
- Multi layout: Agent groups can now support more than one layout. Only exceptions are: cache reader (only works by itself), pointsLayout (has to be at the top of the stack)
- Layout tool Improvements: new selection search, new social layout methods (orientation noise, distance noise, agent separation)
- Added new Variation Modifier Tool
- UI improvements: behaviour parameters have now tools tips and nice names
- AtomsHoudini: Atoms Caches can now be exported with the AtomsCacheExporter rop node
- Added Raw Mirror option
- Added “Enable Distance“ parameter to variation and agent randomizers for better randomization (ACS-233
- Added support to Arnold 6.0.4.0
- Added support to Renderman 23.4
- Added support to AtomsHoudini 18.0.566
- Added support to Clarisse 4.0.sp9 and 4.0.sp10
- Unified layout tool widget between Maya and Houdini
- Added “atomsVersion“ attribute to tcAtomsNode
Bug Fixes:
- Custom mesh loaders with not-on-disk filepaths fail in cfx scenebuilding (ACS-242)
- Change the display type work on multiple AGNs selection (ACS-238)
- Fixed a bug creating multiple iterations of behaviours modules on duplicated agent groups (ACS-239)
- Fixed a bug creating multiple iterations of behaviour modules when copy/pasting modules on different agent groups (ACS-236)
- AtomsKatana only checks out a license when reading a cache (ACS-240)
- Move up/down, check/uncheck work on multiple agent groups (ACS-235)
- Clear selection button works on multiple agent groups (ACS-232)
- Fixed a bug in the houdini proxy node where it would crash when the cache did not exist

Atoms Crowd is new framework designed for crowd simulations for the visual effects and animation industries. Atoms is completely standalone tool that can easily be integrated into any 3D application.

Atoms is different from the others by being a standalone framework allowing it to support multiple 3D software packages. The framework gives you full control on every aspect of the simulation process. Different users can take advantage of their own skillsets: Like working with nodes, python scripting, or plugins — Each can be an Atoms workflow.

Atoms sets the focus of making crowd simulation easy no matter your skill level. The idea is that you don’t need to be a technical artist or savvy with scripting to art direct crowd shots. The “democratization” of crowd simulation and other technically heavy effects sims has been an ongoing one. Others have brought simplicity into focus with products like Golaem Crowd for Maya.

Atoms Crowd 3.6 - New Features


Founded in 2014 by Daniele Federico and Alan Stanzione, who between them have more than 20 years experience within the VFX and Animation industries. Daniele specializes in animation, rigging and pipeline development and has worked on projects to include Gravity, The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Happy Feet 2, The Guardians of the Galaxy to name a few. Alan has a degree in Electronic Engineering and was the main developer of the MPC crowd engine ALICE for many years. ALICE has been used in movies like World War Z, Guardians of the Galaxy, Exodus, Maleficent, 300: Rise of an empire and many others. ToolChefs specialize in creating unique plugins for a variety of software packages, such as Autodesk Maya, The Foundry Nuke, SideFX Houdini and Newtek Lightwave.
