Forming Technologies (FTI) announced the worldwide release of the FormingSuite 2019 Feature Pack 1. Designed for sheet metal cost estimators, design engineers, tooling designers, and advanced planning engineers in the automotive, aerospace, consumer product and electronics industries, this feature pack introduces numerous enhancements that ensure the best quality results and performance for all users.

Overall changes to the software’s workbenches and processes allow for Material Utilization (MUL) and Design for Manufacturability (DFM) concepts to fully be realized. These concepts help customers reduce material waste through virtual tryouts replacing test stampings and addressing formability issues that could threaten the integrity of a part long before the part makes it to the shop floor. New blanking processes in the software allow parts to be nested and created faster, and with much less waste than before, by considering multiple factors in the stamping process. Changes to pilot holes and addendum features integrate real world solutions into the digital process, allowing for increased accuracy, and robust parts and operations.

With this latest release, FormingSuite’s ProcessPlanner module continues to add support for the most specialized processes in sheet metal forming. The Line Die Plan workbench now allows users to detail the process for blanking in multiple operations (for both inline and offline blanking). This new capability improves the visual description of the blanking process as well as the die load, die cost, die size and die weight calculations. New options for the calculation of cam costs increase flexibility and provide more precise estimates for custom and standard cams for progressive dies and line dies. Rounding out the changes to this workbench, a new display option in the ProgDie Process summary display shows the die size along with the process layout.

The COSTOPTIMIZER module now boasts substantial improvements in nesting solver speed as well as two new display options to show carrier condition and the 3D part along with the layout. Cost Optimization of nesting layouts now allows users to choose if the part is cropped while maintaining the addendum offset, or if the addendum is cut without affecting the part. This change gives users the tools needed to effectively evaluate material cost savings opportunities on parts formed with addendum. Extending upon FormingSuite’s unique capabilities for introducing and evaluating web and carrier geometry, the pilot hole tool now provides the option of adding material around pilot holes as is common in real world strip designs. This allows engineers to ensure the integrity of their strip layouts in the software and on the shop floor.

Finally, significant updates have been made to trimming in FastIncremental. Automatic mesh refinement during trimming ensures that results of trim operations are precise. Automatic trimming now provides quicker solutions and more accurate results.

- Improved user interface for removing notches in Fill Notches dialog
- Improved the tree structure to represent essembly geometries (with new geometry translator)
- Added option to select all in Merge Geometry Set dialog

Progressive Nesting:
- Nesting Solver updated to improve solving time

- Removed Solve button to get results for selected layouts
Stretch Web:
- Pin button is introduced in dialogs for solid web, oval web, S-web, and pilot hole
- Last entered values are remembered in dialogs for solid web, oval web, S-web, and pilot hole
- Band around pilot hole is introduced in pilot hole function
- Two new displays are added (show carrier condition and show part) with toggle buttons

- Improved scrap generation in 2D process (more realistic scraps)
- Improved handling of pilot hole on scrap in 2D and 3D processes
- Added functionalities to cut, merge, and generate bridge for double attached parts in 3D process
- Improved processing of bridge segments for double attached parts
- Die Estimation Parameters are put outside the summary table to access them before creating summary table
- Added processing of pilot holes with band
- Added dimensions for progression and width of coil on summary display

- Added display in summary table for die size to show front to back and left to right values
Line Die Plan:
- Added editable blanking allowing process planning for blanking (scrap plan)
- Added Feed direction, operation starting line, and scrap size in Blanking Settings
- Added editable blanking table with a list of supporting functions
- Added functionality to create and process pilot holes on scrap in editable blanking
- Added Show Operation display (shows active actions) in editable blanking
- Added comprehensive validation rules in editable blanking with meaningful warning/error messages
- Summary can now be generated for offline blanking only
- Summary display for the process is improved by adding editable blanking
- Improved die load, die cost, die size, and die weight based on new editable blanking
- Improved auto processing of two unattached parts

About FTI FormingSuite 2019. This release brings advances in material cost modeling as this release introduces users to a new, easier and more flexible method for creating and editing variable addendum on blank shapes by interactively morphing (dragging) curves. Focus has been on improving support for DFM and KPR studies with customizable results ranges for numerical results (major, minor, thickness strains, safety margin) to address organizational standards for formability as well as improved reporting which include springback results. Cost Optimization layout editing adds support for cropping two different parts during optimization. A powerful new Progressive Nesting Web Simulation solver has also been introduced to provide engineers fast and accurate simulation to understand the impact of web design on the cost and method plan.

FASTIncremental users can now import scanned data to replace tooling meshes and now have more precise controls for timing of tools and cams. Materials can be defined with full anisotropic (plastic strain ratio) accounting for the rolling direction of the sheet material with r0 (parallel), r45 (diagonal) and r90 (transverse) as determined through material testing. Large organizations can now use FASTIncremental with a networked LS-DYNA solver.
