If you're looking for that one elusive word to finish a crossword puzzle, or you have six letters and a blank in Scrabble and you just know there's a seven letter word in there somewhere, CrossGuesser is just what you need. It checks crossword patterns or anagram combinations against a list of almost 200,000 English words.
What can it do?
As stated above in the intro, the program can help you with just about ANY crossword or anagram related problem you may have. I use this a lot if I am doing any puzzles (Maybe that just tells you how uneducated I am right?). You simply enter a partial word with the blanks left in there and then select 'crossword' from the really simple interface. then you are shown a load of possible crossoword entires that fit! Simple.
For anagrams it is just as simple. You enter the letters of the anagram you have and then hit Anagrams on the interface and…you guess it, you get a list of possible words made from the letters.
It doesn't stop there strangely but the creator added some other stuff too…
(For a 1Mb program it really packs in the useful stuff)
More Features!
Using asterisks (stars) in patterns adds a whole new dimension to CrossGuesser. While not that useful for word games, patterns containing stars allow you to explore words in a very entertaining way. Here are a few examples of patterns of this type.
We'd find all words which start with computer using this pattern:
C O M P U T E R *
––––––––––––––
You can use as many asterisks as you like in a pattern. This Crossword pattern finds all words with man anywhere inside them:
* M A N *
––––––––––––––
You can find all words eight letters or longer using this Crossword pattern:
_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ *
––––––––––––––
Suppose you wanted words that are five letters or shorter? This requires an Anagram pattern:
_ _ _ _ _
This will give five letter words in alphabetic order first, followed by a combined list (the partials) in alphabetic order of words which are four letters or less.
Like So…
––––––––––––––
Bonus Features!
CrossGuesser includes a number of "bonus features" which are activated with Alt- key combinations. They don't work with patterns, so it makes no difference what pattern is displayed when the Alt- combination is pressed.
Special Searches
These are "canned" searches which cannot be performed using CrossGuesser's basic patterns.
Alt-1: Finds all words that contain a Q without a corresponding U.
Alt-2: Finds palindromes, words which read the same forwards and backwards.
Alt-3: Finds words where the first letter is the same as the last.
Alt-4: Finds words whose letters are in alphabetical order.
Alt-5: Finds words consisting of only consonants (including Y).
Alt-6: Finds words that have five or more consonants (not including Y) in a row.
Alt-7: Finds words consisting of only vowels, not including Y.
Alt-8: Finds words that have five or more vowels (not including Y) in a row.
Alt-9: Finds words that include triple letters.
Alt-0: Finds words that include three or more double letters.
Word Games
Alt-K (for Krosswords): A word will appear in the pattern area with one or more missing letters. You will be asked to find the missing "crossword." Solve the puzzle in your head or on paper and press Enter to see the solution. Note that sometimes there is more than one correct solution.
Alt-J (for Jumble): A mixed-up group of letters will appear in the pattern area and you will be asked how many anagrams you can find. Rearrange these letters into a valid word (it will always be possible) in your head or on paper and press Enter to see the solution. Note that sometimes there is more than one correct solution.
For a tougher Alt-J challenge, try to find partial anagrams for this group of letters. These are words which contain some, but not all, of the letters in the puzzle and no other letters. When you press Enter the program will give you a list of full and partial anagrams.

A little info from me
This is a rare and hard to get program that came on a PC Magazine disc in 2002. I searched and searched for it once and finally located it on one server…I am amazed they never released it or updated it or anything and just left it as a PC Magazine freebie. The magazine has a website and they charge you for a CD compiltaion or download with this program on it. This is NOT me reposting freeware. I bring it here as it really does need to be set loose into the www!
Enjoy this fine and really useful program! Also I am sure it'll help out those of you trying to better learn English!
