The software developer Autodesk is pleased to announce the availability of new release core infrastructure design solution Civil 3D (2022). This release includes new and updated features, performance enhancements, and fixes.

    What's new in Civil 3D (2022)

The 2022 releases for civil design come packed with new capabilities and updates:

    - New capabilities advancing automation for site grading
    - Enhanced conceptual design features for transportation workflows
    - More streamlined multi-disciplinary bridge design workflows
    - Updates driving project efficiency with Project Explorer and Model Builder
    - Expanded reality capture capabilities to help convert the physical world to a digital model

Here are the top reasons you should get excited about Civil 3D (2022):

Let’s dive deeper into the best new capabilities just released in Civil 3D (2022).

The BIG news: Grading Optimization for Civil 3D

Civil + Structural Engineering Magazine published Design Automation is the Necessary Future for Civil Infrastructure, an editorial penned by our very own Theo Agelopoulos. We see design automation as a step towards realizing computational and generative design for civil engineering.

Automation is introducing new and innovative ways of working for civil engineers, contractors, architects and those on the frontlines of today’s urgent infrastructure requirements.

After introducing Dynamo for Civil 3D with the 2020 release, we continue to automate design with the introduction of Grading Optimization for Civil 3D. Grading Optimization, available only in the Autodesk® AEC Collection, brings automation to manual, complex, and tedious site grading processes, helping you to save time while optimizing terrain surface and 3D geometry for further design.

Grading Optimization takes the parameters that you have specified and generates, very quickly, an optimal grading solution. This grading solution will also be mindful of earthwork quantities. The result of the optimization can be sent directly back to Civil 3D, giving the engineer great flexibility in choosing the best, most cost-effective grading design. Grading Optimization gives the engineer the power to more efficiently grade their engineering projects.

    Enhancements for roadway design

New features for Civil 3D 2022 include the expanded capabilities of the connected alignment workflow, particularly for complex intersections and interchanges.

When selecting intersecting alignments, users have a broader range of geometric options for the connecting alignment. The new connected alignment solution supports complex curve groups, offsets from parent alignments, curves larger than 180-degrees, and calculates the crossfall of the associated profiles. This tool puts greater control into your hands for interchange design. Learn more in the video below.

    Enhancements to drive project efficiency

Last year, we introduced Project Explorer through the AEC Collection, transforming how users navigate, visualize, and interact with infrastructure design models in Civil 3D.

With the release of Civil 3D 2022, we’ve made two major updates to Project Explorer. First, we added pressure networks to the Civil 3D objects supported through the Project Explorer user interface. Project Explorer offers land development customers a more holistic view into the design data of their pressure network and enables them to extract that data into custom reports and dynamic AutoCAD tables.

In the update to Project Explorer, the interaction with the new pressure network tab will feel familiar if you have used the Pipe Networks tab in previous versions. One key difference to note: The Pressure pipe runs, which are supported in core Civil 3D, can be selected on the upper left corner of the Pressure Networks tab.

The second major update to Project Explorer is support for local languages – which is now on par with languages supported by Civil 3D. The Project Explorer user interface will be shown in the language that is detected in Windows. If Windows is set to use a language Project Explorer does not support, it will default to English.

    Alignments
Fixed an issue in which duplicate objects were created when moving an alignment to a new site.
Fixed an issue in which the overlapped parts of a connected alignment were not recognized as a corridor target.
    API
Fixed an issue with Civil 3D COM type library names.
Fixed an issue in which a sample line could not be created at an alignment start station or end station using the API.
    Assemblies and Subassemblies
Fixed an issue in which the order of subassembly parameters in the Subassemblies Properties dialog box changed if the values were edited in the Properties dialog box invoked from the Tool Palette.
Fixed an issue in which the OverlayWidenWithSuper1 subassembly showed duplicate labels for the Pave link.
    Autodesk Collaboration for Civil 3D
Fixed an issue in which an error message "Querying children on items not marked as folders is not supported" would be displayed unexpectedly.
Fixed an issue in which a file version was increased when the file had a circular reference to another file that was saved.
Fixed an issue that caused pending action failures when accessing files with circular relationships during save operations.
Fixed an issue in which the ShortcutsHistory.xml and an associated file in the _Shortcuts folder were regenerated each time the _Shortcuts folder had a status of Online in Autodesk Docs and Civil 3D was launched.
    Corridors
Improved stability when using Restore Corridor Bowties command.
Fixed an issue in which frequencies along curves specified in the Frequency to Apply Assemblies dialog box did not work properly when set to By Curvature.
    Cross Sections
Fixed an issue in which the Hide Label Override Glyphs command did not work for corridor section labels.
Fixed an issue in which linetypes were not displayed properly in section views when the surface sections used linetypes from an RSC file.
Fixed an issue in which parts of corridor section labels would be moved to the wrong location in a section view when the source sample line became skewed.
Fixed an issue in which drafting elements that were not within or crossing but close to the drafting buffers were bound with the section views.
    Data Shortcuts
Fixed an issue in which a pay item assigned to a data-referenced pipe would not be changed after updating the data shortcut source.
Fixed an issue in which the contextual ribbon tab would display "Pipe Networks" instead of "Alignment" when an alignment data reference was selected if the alignment was a Miscellaneous type.
    Drawing Import/Export
Fixed an issue in which exporting a drawing to DGN did not produce a result.
Fixed an issue in which the UCS information was lost from a drawing that was exported using the ExportC3DDrawing command.
Fixed a stability issue that would occur when exporting a Civil 3D drawing that contained large surfaces.
    Feature Lines and Grading
Fixed an issue in which the Layer option in the OffsetFeature command did not work for polylines or 3D polylines.
Fixed an issue in which grading that used a surface target would not stop as expected at the surface.
Fixed an issue that caused invisible alignments to be created while updating a feature line which is the baseline of a corridor. Related to this issue, customers are encouraged to use the PurgeHiddenAlignsfromSites command on drawings that have feature line-based corridors. If you do not run the PurgeHiddenAlignsfromSites command prior to editing a feature line in a feature line-based corridor, and you subsequently have issues with the feature line that is used in the corridor (for example, it is missing and you can no longer select it), undo your changes or close the drawing without saving it, reopen it, and then run the PurgeHiddenAlignsfromSites command.
