Zero 7 is a downtempo act comprising Henry Binns and Sam Hardaker from the United Kingdom. The band’s songs feature vocals from Mozez, Sia Furler, Tina Dico, Sophie Barker and José González.
On 23rd April 2001 they released their debut album, Simple Things, to wide acclaim. The album featured collaborations with vocalists Mozez, Sia Furler, and Sophie Barker.
On 1st March 2004 they released their second album, When It Falls. In addition to the three vocalists from their first album, it also featured a collaboration with Tina Dico. In the same year, Binns also co-wrote the Emma Bunton track Breathing from her second solo album.
Their third album The Garden was released on 22nd May 2006 and features José González and Sia Furler. It is a departure from the trip-hop sound that defined their first two albums, Simple Things and When It Falls. The Garden has much more of an acoustic rather than electronic flavour to it. The Garden is also notable in that it marks the vocal debut of Henry Binns; and while he doesn’t want the record to be defined by such a fact, it does add another personality to the mix. He duets on PlayThrow It All Away, PlayThis Fine Social Scene and PlayWaiting to Die, and sings solo on PlayYour Place.
However, if there is one fact that Henry and Sam don’t want people to be confused by, it is the title of the album, The Garden. Taken from the album artwork, which is a series of collages designed by a friend of theirs, entitled, spookily enough, The Garden, the duo are keen for the album’s meaning not to get lost in translation.

Fourth album, following 2006's 'The Garden', from the Brit downtempo/chillout duo. Not content to make the same album again, with 'Yeah Ghost' they have turned in a markedly different work brimming with new ideas, from funky uptempo club bouncers, through avant-garde ambient, to indie-influenced, organic-sounding tracks like the free single 'Everything Up (Zizou)'. Features vocals from folkie Martha Tilston and the soulful, throaty Eska Mtungwazi, who has performed with Matthew Herbert.
Info:
Over the last ten years, Henry Binns and Sam Hardaker (aka Zero 7) have amassed a decent reputation as one of the 90’s key ‘post-rave’ electronica outfits. Their debut album Simple Things, was one of the most uplifting and coherent downtempo documents of the era, up there with classics by Massive Attack, Air and Nightmares On Wax. Subsequent albums When It Falls and The Garden have been good, if less consistent. Their latest offering, Yeah Ghost, is their patchiest yet, zigzagging carelessly through experimental electronica, meandering acoustic folk ("Pop Art Blue", "Swing") and upbeat tracks like the Basement Jaxx-esque "Mr McGee" and "Medicine Man" (both featuring London vocalist Eska). While there are undeniably some good songs here, many of them featuring the golden Zero 7 sound, others such as recent single "Everything Up (Zizou)"–which features Binns on vocals–feel sub-standard, especially lyrically, and the more outré moments ("Count Me Out", "Solastalgia", "Ghost sYMbOL", often feel jarring rather than interesting or exploratory. While it’s doubtless good for bands to step out of their comfort zones, it’s generally better if they can do it with a little more grace and vision. –Danny McKenna

Beautifully crafted and produced, When It Falls is a fitting follow-up to Zero 7's 2001 platinum hit Simple Things. Reintroducing several of their debut's guest vocalists, the band continue to meld subtle orchestration, elegant jazz and easy-going West Coast soul and folk, creating a sound so tasteful it makes Morcheeba sound like Napalm Death. The album opens with the appropriately titled "Warm Sound," where long-time collaborator Mozez delivers his spacey soul over a quivering flute and funky keys. Later he reappears for the string-swept lullaby "Over Our Heads." Next up is newcomer Tina Dico who lends the softest of vocals to "Home," where quietly chiming guitars rise to a careful collision of brass, and "The Space Between," a techno-update of 70s folk-jazz. Much the same service is provided by Sophie Barker on "Passing By" and "In Time," which recalls the sweet innocence of early James Taylor. It's left to Sia Furler to add extra color, her slight rasp lending character to both "Somersault" and "Speed Dial No 2." Throughout, the band introduce a welter of instruments and effects, sometimes approaching the psychedelic, though they're keen to avoid an over-technological coldness–the squeak of finger on guitar string is never far away. For fans of Simple Things, it's a real treat.

Zero 7's ability to conjure beautiful lullabies with all the romance of 1960s French pop (as found on their debut LP, Simple Things) would have made them the toast of soundtrack composers and chill-out connoisseurs the world over. Unfortunately, two Frenchmen beat Henry Binns and Sam Hardaker to the title of "masters of comedown cool," leaving the London duo to be forever called "the British Air." And this is fair; the similarities between Zero 7's lush cinematic soundscapes and those of Air's Moon Safari and the Virgin Suicides score are so strong as to sound almost intentional. Nonetheless, their debut is a truly gorgeous album. It has all the tried and tested atmospheric tricks–bleeps and whooshes layered over plodding Fender Rhodes chords, swathes of strings and tender trumpet parps–but it's Binns and Hardaker's languid grooves and the soft melancholy of their melodies that make dream-state instrumentals "Give It Away" and "Polaris" utterly enchanting. The real power of Simple Things, however, is in its songs. As beautiful as the ambient strains are, when laid beneath the seductive vocals of Australian diva Sia on the ethereal "Destiny" or the heart-breaking "Distractions," their potency becomes apparent.

1 I Have Seen (5:06)
2 Polaris (4:48)
