With Path of Totality, Tombs has come into their own as one of the finest heavy bands in the world.
If there is anything that separates the band Tombs from most of its peers in the shady American black metal scene it is the lack of theater. No matter the atmosphere of utter darkness or the icy screams, Tombs remains a band of people. Serious human people. That is the great strength of the sound on ‘Path Of Totality’; a black metal record in the least pure sense of the word.Tracklist:
On debut ‘Winter Hours’ Mike Hill and his companions already proved themselves able to establish a sound of their own independent of any genre. Only the more death metal oriented colleagues of Withered come anywhere near their mixture of sludge and black metal. Tombs takes the genre-bending even further on ‘Path Of Totality’ now also lending from shoegaze, and even postpunk and gothic-y sounds. Just listen to ‘Passageways’ to hear a slight Bauhaus-like undertone, or ‘Black Haven’ with an intro that could just as well have been on a The Cure record. Tombs takes all these elements and roughly busts them into the shape they see fit. With a butcher behind the drumkit who is basically capable of doing anything but monotonous hammering, varying from straight-on black metal to doomy dirges and everything in between the foundations of the Tombs sound are rock solid. Hill’s versatile voice dominates. His brutal bark crushes all, and his low contemplating chanting sends shivers through spines. Getting bored is not an option, because in the dark labyrinthine sound of Tombs there are surprises behind after twist and turn.
It is very impressive how Tombs has succeeded in enriching its sound. Especially the fact that they have become more of a black metal band without shape-shifting into a bunch of trolls with dripping black make-up is strong. The band does need any theatrics to get their message across, that much is clear. It makes ‘Path Of Totality’ one of the best, but more important one of the most genuine records that has been released this year. Rating: 94/100-Lords Of Metal
