Swedish Radio Choir, Peter Dijkstra, conductor

Channel Classics has taken a turn into new territory with this release of sacred choral works by contemporary Swedish composer Sven-David Sandström (b. 1942) – and it turns out to be one of the label’s most engaging, enlightening – and exciting – discs of the year. ...it challenges our traditional expectations of what a choral concert is about. Here we’re confronted with music that doesn’t fit any regular form, yet faithfully follows time-honored biblical texts, from the Psalms to the Mass to the Song of Songs. ... Sandstrom writes with an assured understanding of voices, ...and while his works are for the most part extremely challenging, both for listeners and performers, the musical language is fresh and vital and perfectly suited to the medium.

The use of canonical works as musical inspiration or as a starting-point ...is one of eight special characteristics of Sandström's choral writing. These occur repeatedly throughout the works on this disc - without ever detracting from the general attractiveness and memorableness of Sandström's music. The other seven are: non-language sounds, such as humming - sometimes giving the impression of accompaniment by double-basses and tremolo; theatrical interaction of vocal groupings; extended vocal groups, often employing six voices instead of the more usual four; "layered repetition of rhythmic and melodic cells, creating a minimalist-sounding texture"; the use of extreme tempi or radical rallentandos or accelerandi; and extreme tessitura...

Unimaginative album name notwithstanding, this is a marvelous record - I particularly like an eclectic nature of his compositions and different vocal techniques that are called for - non-linguistic utterances, unique voicings, music that borrows from drama/theater-like voice interactions, extremes of expression and so on. Definately a composer to keep an eye for.
