Features the high-fidelity SHM-CD format (compatible with standard CD player) and the latest 24bit 192kHz remastering. This LP was the very obvious follow-up to the moderately commercially successful "The Look of Love." Both took their titles from their opening Burt Bacharach tunes; and both included other contemporary pop hits, including by the Beatles. This one added a second Paul McCartney Beatles song, with the last two tracks being "Hey Jude" and "Fool on the Hill."

The arranger on both "The Look of Love" and "Always Something There" was the great Thad Jones, who contributed one excellent original blues-jazz composition for each - here, one called "Home Town," which outstrips everything else due to its creative jazz content. As opposed to "The Look of Love," on which Jones stuck strictly to arranging and composing, for this one he added his own trumpet playing on half of the ten tracks. However, I would say that much of this particular "Always Something There" advantage is offset by the dubbed-in strings on all tracks which only add to the orchestral pop side while detracting from the soul-jazz side.

There is quite a roster of notable sidemen here, including Kenny Burrell on guitar (for eight tracks); Jerome Richardson on flute, clarinet and duet tenor sax; and Herbie Hancock and Hank Jones splitting the piano assignments (with Hancock appearing on eight tracks).

The two slow, romantic ballads, Leslie Bricusse's "When I Look in Your Eyes" (from "Doctor Dolittle") and "Song for Bonnie" (an original by brother Tommy Turrentine) are beautifully rendered - and I'll cut them some slack for their use of the dubbed-in strings.

That leaves the seven pop covers, which are generally taken at a midtempo pace (which means "Hey Jude" moves along faster than normal, actually making for an appealing change) and don't stray too far from their principal melodies. Frankly, not much can be done with "Little Green Apples" or "Those Were the Days," but Turrentine and company sizzle and sometimes even soar on the others due to the cool, brilliant melodies, changes and sequences they have to work with. In addition to "Hey Jude" and a graceful, waltz-time "Fool on the Hill," there's an incendiary, bluesy and soulful take on the Doors' "Light My Fire" and a stone groovy one on Laura Nyro's "Stoned Soul Picnic." And the title song, "Always Something There," originally recorded as a soul record by Lou Johnson, is given a prime soul-jazz take here to get things started. Blue Note artists as formidable as the ones I've named cannot possibly miss targets this well constructed - and they don't. The good time they are having bounces right back on us, the listeners. Special kudos to Stanley on "Stoned Soul Picnic" for becoming so enthralled that he can't hold back from launching into some far-out improvisation toward the end. Too bad it gets faded out so quickly, as this LP was not really going for that sort of action.

This Japanese-import Blue Note reissue is the first high-quality one for this LP (avoid the earlier Liberty-label cheapo knockoff reissue at all costs!) - with impeccable stereo sound, all the original artwork, plus the original liner notes by the renowned musician and jazz writer Leonard Feather.

Granted, this is not for jazz purists who view with utter contempt anything associated with sixties pop songs. In my opinion, just a couple of the song choices are not quite up to snuff, and the strings should have been limited to the ballads only. However, if you just want to hear some delightfully melodic '60s music played unpretentiously and enthusiastically by an all-time great who delivers the goods with his trademark soulful tone and effortlessly attractive phrasing, this is a worthwhile CD to have.
