Vocalist Shoshana Bush grew up in Los Angeles singing American standards and loving Ella and Louis. After graduating from Columbia University with a degree in jazz studies, working with George Lewis, Christine Correa and Barry Harris, she moved back to LA and spent two years gigging and expanding her repertoire. These years were highlighted by two sold out shows at Catalina Jazz Club, one in November 2010 and another in August 2011.
After recording her first demo, Shoshana moved back to New York in Fall 2011. Armored with her West coast sensibility, she soars on the subtleties of her storytelling. "This young girl can convincingly belt-out the blues, as she demonstrated on Nina Simone and Abbey Lincoln’s “Blues for Mamma,” but can sensitively convey the lyrics on her ballads, where her delivery is very conversational in tone and tempo, as she makes the songs a story-telling experience," Les Traub, Cabaret Scenes. Influenced by Nina Simone, Blossom Dearie, and Ahmad Jamal, Shoshana chooses songs and creates her arrangements based upon her own narrative instincts and her multi-genre love of music. Traub articulates, “Her varied approach to the material included an a cappella rendering of the verse to “Can’t Help Lovin Dat Man” and an effective borrowing of Blossom Dearie’s arrangement of “Just One of Those Things.”
Shoshana ventures back to Los Angeles every few months to perform, record and connect with her LA-based, side projects – rap group Welcome To The ICE AGE and indie-electronic band Blue Green Gray. Back home, she also makes time for jazz performances, like her January 3rd, 2013 show at Catalina Jazz Club. Supported by her most diverse and talented group of muscians to date – Isamu McGregor (piano) Larry Koons (guitar) George Young (alto sax/flute) David Robaire (Bass) Gene Coye (Drums) – the show was audio and video recording and is subsequently creating her first full length, live album entitled Shoshana Bush & Friends Live at Catalina Jazz Club. “The singer performed with a clear and cool confidence, though her personality was subdued and mild” Tim Reid Jr., Music Connection. Reid continues, “Bush has a beautiful soft, smoky tone that suits perfectly for the Jobim classic “How Insensitive,” a highlight of the evening.”
The album’s impending release will surely provide Shoshana with a new set of tools to take on the Jazz and Blues world. “Shoshana Bush is a developing artist with a bright future as a jazz singer,” Les Traub, Cabaret Scenes.
