Chordis Canam for harpsichord and tape
(1989) The title of this work refers to a text inside Annelie de Man's harpsichord. She asked the Frisian artist Sies Bleeker to redesign her instrument in a manner more appropriate to the performance of contemporary music. Chordis Canam is dedicated to Annelie de Man and Sies Bleeker. The work won the second prize at the 19th Concours International de Musique Electroacoustique/Bourges 1991 and was selected for the World Music Days at Oslo, 1990.
Ivory landscape for piano (1992)
This composition was written at the request of the pianists Polo de Haas and Ananda Sukarlan, and commissioned by the Fund for the Creation of Music. For this work the composer devised 'chord laths' enabling the performer to play large chords which exceed the range of both hands and distribute the keypressure evenly. Ivory Landscape was selected for the World Music Days in Mexico, 1993.
Entanglements for recorders and tape (one performer)
(1988, rev. 1992) In this work the performer creates her own ensemble. Before live performance two, three or more tracks have to be recorded on tape (sopranino, treble, tenor and bass recorder). Entanglements was commissioned by the Johan Wagenaarstichting.
Departures from the Romantic Agony for piano trio (1993)
The Osiris Trio asked me to write a work for them, that could be combined with the Romantic repertoire. This made it inevitable to ask myself what 'Romanticism' actually meant to me. The book 'The Romantic Agony' by Mario Praz provided inspiration. Departures should not be inter-preted as a work in a Romantic idiom, but rather as a piece beginning with Romantic movements. As the work progresses, it more and more departs from these movements. Departures is dedic-ated to the Osiris Trio, and was commissioned by the Baron de Vos van Steenwijkfonds.
Momentum for bass clarinet, harpsichord and tape (1991)
The work was composed at the request of the performers Annelie de Man, harpsichord, and Harry Sparnaay, bass clarinet, and was dedicated to them. Starting point of this piece was the idea that sound cannot only generate musical movement, but suggest physical movement as well. At certain moments the performers are virtually propelled by the tape as the music unfolds. As far as timing is concerned it is a demanding piece, particularly at the end.
Vision for tape (1994)
This tape composition is based on themes from the work of the Frisian painter Boele Bregman. (1918- 1980). Bregman was a painter of strong socialist convictions. He started out with a figurative and poetical approach of painting, later developing a more abstract style, influenced by Paul Klee a.o. World War II had a shattering impact on him, changing his idealistic thinking into despair and bitterness. He realized his socialist dreams would never materialize, and mistrusted any form of authority for the rest of his life. In spite of depressions and nightmares he somehow managed to regain his balance and find consolation in his work. These aspects of his work form the basis of my composition: 1. The idealism at the beginning of his career (aria for boy soprano) 2. The terrors of war and the meaningless speeches of politicians. 3. The final resignation and consolation found in his work (aria for baritone). Vision was commissioned by the Fund for the Creation of Music and was dedicated to Monica Metz who wrote the texts.
