The problem of how to begin each of his music dramas with an appropiate prelude was solved by Richard Wagner in various ways. He took the traditional, even conventional, models and transmuted them, subjugating them to the demands of his uncompromising artistic will. The further he left behind such traditional operatic forms as chorus, duet and melifluous aria, the more he went his own way - and made that way accesible to later generations of composers - in the orchestral music heard at the outset and before the individual acts. Each step into the future marked a completely new departure; only the idea and ideal of a seamless fusion of music and drama remained constant.
