In one of his letters to Strauss, written some years after the first performance, Hofmannsthal said, "We have lacked lightness of touch", and this is certainly true of the fairy-tale aspects of the libretto. He thought of the opera, when its theme first came into his mind, as "standing in much the same relation to Die Zauberfiole as our Rosen/cavalier does to Figaro", but did not seem to realize what a very distant relationship that was. Harms Harnmelmann, in his most interesting monograph on the poet, says that Die Frau "has been likened not unfairly to a gorgeous barge over-weighted with symbols and too cumbersome to move". But if Strauss's music sometimes betrays the burden it does unquestionably move and carry the listener along with it, enchanting him frequently with its beautiful lyricism and gorgeous orchestral colouring, and here and there with its engaging simplicity. One can easily ignore the symbolic details Hofmannsthal kept adding from ancient mythology to what he intended to be a Christian message summed up, as Hofmannsthal said, in Goethe's words, "Though self-conquest man frees himself from the law that binds all creatures." The chief characters, the Emperor and his wife, Barak, the dyer, and his wife, have to undergo trials and tribulations to achieve this conquest and it is moving to follow the gradual change of heart that comes to them. The Empress is the central character, a supernatural being, daughter of Keikobad, ruler of the spirits, who has inherited her mother's feeling for human beings. She has the power to assume allforms of life and after taking human shape she falls in love with the Emperor.
