MONTEIRO, YOUNG & HOLT or M.Y.H. for short is the name of a band that brings together the best jazz from the U.S. and Asia. The group consists one of Asia's top jazz pianists, Jeremy Monteiro from Singapore and two of Chicago's swingiest jazzman, Eldee Young on double bass and Redd Holt on drums.
In 1988, the group together with O'Donel Levy and saxman John Stubblefied played a rousing early morning concert at the prestigious Montreux Jazz festival. The festival director, Claude Nobs called the concert "an unforgettable set which will remain a classic concert of the first 22 years of Montreux".
The Montreux concert and "live" album, was a high point in the musical relationship established between the members of the trio in 1986, when they recorded Singapore's first digital jazz recording "Back to Basics" together with members of the Singapore Jazz group JERAMZEE and other American jazz musicians. The trio has gone on to record another album, "Blues for the Saxophone Club" (with Ernie Watts & O'Donel Levy) and has performed together on a regular basis in Singapore, Hong Kong (at The Jazz Club) and Washington D.C., where they appeared under the banner of Young-Holt Unlimited featuring Jeremy Monteiro.
Back in the 60's, the name Young-Holt Unlimited was a household name which appeared on the Billboards R&B charts for their hits, Soulful Strut and Wack Wack, they even topped the Soul Brothers Chart with Soulful Strut in a chart that included Stevie Wonder at number 4, Diana Ross & The Supremes at number 6 and James Brown at number 7.
This was an impressive boost for the duo, who were the original rhythm section of the Ramsey Lewis Trio. While with Ramsey Lewis, they scored a string of hits including "The In Crowd" and won a Grammy for their efforts.
This Reissue Special Edition is dedicated to the memory of my late best friend, bassist & vocalist Eldee Young, the amazing saxophonist John Stubblefield and my father Abner Monteiro who managed this band - best wishes, Jeremy Monteiro
