This group was drummer Walter Perkins's vehicle for post-bop and neo-classical expression. Nice idea, taking MJQ style to new territory. These guy's know how to compose/arrange and solo. Pianist,Harold Mabern composition;"Richie's Dilemma" is one of my favorite tunes on this cd, which I've been listening to for at least 50 year's with all the other great tunes here. Great minor arrangement for the "Trolly Song" . Ray Bryant's blusey/gospel piece has some interesting changes. Booker Little's tune, has that Booker sound. The under rated Willie Thomas know's his way around that trumpet of his. And, Alto man, Strozier is truly FANTASTIC! Mabern,Cranshaw,Perkins are equal to the front men, that's for sure. Over 78 minutes of CLASSIC JAZZ ! ! ! I also recommend,"THE FANTASTIC FRANK STROZIER" cd with the equally Fantastic Booker Little.
