Now, I’m not into historical recordings that much, basically because I’m not at all sure legendary interpreters would undeniably be so much better than the contemporary ones.
However, there were musicians of old who truly performed at a mythical level, and flutist Marcel Moyse is one of them. The man must be heard to be believed. I really think he belongs into the category Bach/organ – Liszt/piano – Paganini/violin, or choose your own analogy.
I'm listening to him right now, and I have this same uncanny feeling as when I'm listening to Bach, seeing a Rembrandt painting, or reading Shakespeare: the man's just too good. He’s mind blowing. He's got it right, right, right; every note, every nuance, every colour, every shift of emotion, he's got it right, like nobody before him, or I doubt anybody after him ever will.
It’s beautiful and frightening at the same time. How on earth…?

Most recordings of Moyse are quite old, 1930s and thereabouts. This is a remaster. I think it’s a good one. The marvelous tones this man knew to conjure up come to us in a very convincing way and will not fail to put a spell on you.
