Maggie Herron - In The Wings (2014)

Maggie Herron is a masterful composer, songwriter, jazz pianist and vocalist. Her song writing ranges from retro jazz ballads: "Don't Ask Me To Stop" and "I Could Sooner" to neo classical: "In The Wings" and bebop: "Stepping Out", compositions. There is a synergy between her voice(mesmerizing), piano and sax. "Woodstock", the only cover song on this CD, is thoroughly fresh and captivating. Maggie, a longtime Hawaii artist, is on piano and vocals, joined by Paul Lindbergh on sax and flute, Eldred Ahlo on trumpet and flugelhorn, Dean Taba on upright and electric bass, Noel Okimoto on drums and Kevin Hirasa on guitar. Her composition, "Up Early" brings to mind Chick Corea, while her soloing hints of a background in classical music (think Beethoven). Maggie plays with a melodic sensibility. Her voice brings to mind an exceptional aged wine, smoky and emotional with surprising notes in the higher octave range. Think Diana Krall and Annie Lennox with a touch of Aretha. A complete talent!
