Joshua Redman is the most acclaimed and charismatic jazz artist to have emerged in the decade of the 1990s. He has since performed and/or recorded with Elvin Jones, Charles Haden, Jack DeJohnette, Pat Metheny, Roy Hargrove, the Mingus Dynasty and Big Band, Red Rodney, and Paul Motion, among many others. He was also voted Best New Artist in the 1992 Jazz Times reader's poll…
Personnel: Joshua Redman (soprano saxophone); Chris Cheek (soprano saxophone); Dewey Redman, Joe Lovano (tenor saxophone); Christian McBride, Larry Grenadier, Reuben Rogers (bass instrument); Eric Harland, Ali Jackson, Brian Blade (drums). Following tenor saxophonist Sonny Rollins's landmark albums WAY OUT WEST and FREEDOM SUITE, the sax-bass-drums trio context became de rigueur in jazz. With his brisk, hearty tone and very forward-looking approach, tenor ace Joshua Redman pays tribute to Sonny and comparable tenor triumphs (by Wayne Shorter, Stan Getz, etc.) with performances from three different trios. But BACK EAST is no exercise in nostalgia, as Redman realizes the best homage is to put a fresh, personal spin on lessons learned.
