Musica Antiqua Köln (Wilbert Hazelzet - transverse flute
Reinhard Goebel, Hajo Bäß - violin, Karlheinz Steeb - viola
Jaap ter Linden - cello, Jean-Michel Forest - violone
Henk Bouman - harpsichord) dir. Reinhard Goebel

With so much excellent work over the years from MAK, this relatively early jewel has often been overlooked. Music by minor masters this may be but Goebel and his high-powered team are at their persuasive best. (L. K., Gramophone, Sept. 2007)

* * * * *

[…] For the most part, […] early eighteenth-century French concertos were lightly scored and modest in intent. Such is the nature of the […] works collected here. What is lacking in substance, though, is amply compensated for in elegance, delicacy of expression and Gallic esprit.

Pierre-Gabriel Buffardin is best remembered today, if remembered at all, for his association with the Dresden Court Orchestra and by the fact that he taught Johann Jacob Bach, younger brother of J. S. Bach. Buffardin was a great virtuoso and teacher but only two compositions by him have survived. A pity, perhaps, for his Flute Concerto in F minor is a most attractive salon piece in the galant style.

The Concerto in D major for cello by Boismortier like the captivating Corrette Concertos comiques, falls somewhere between Sonata and concerto. There's more Italian than French flavour to this piece whereas the Corrette Concerto performed here, Les Sauvages et La Furstemberg has specific French associations. Admirers of Rameau's music will recognize at once the jaunty two-in-a-bar theme of the opening movement upon which a sequence of colourful variations is based. Brittle though he may be as a composer, Corrette's Concertos corniques are immensely charming and sometimes witty pieces which deserve more credit than they are often granted.

The […] remaining works are rather more substantial even though the Concerto by Jean-Baptiste Quentin actually comes from a set of sonatas in three and four parts. One might be forgiven for supposing the poignant sonorities of the opening movement to be the work of an Italian; its second slow movement, too, possesses individuality through the absence of any bass accompaniment. Lastly, comes a Flute Concerto in A minor by Michel Blavet whose sonatas for flute, often with fanciful titles, are well known to flautists. Blavet, like Leclair, makes a gesture towards juxtaposing if not actually uniting French and Italian styles by the placing of a French dance measure between two strongly Italianate outer movements.

The performances are accomplished with the "victor ludorum" going to the flautist, Wilbert Hazelzet. I notice one or two new names in the ensemble but no falling off in the exemplary high standards set by Reinhard Goebel. I did feel, however, that Goebel's playing in the Corrette concerto was a little too severe; the emphasis struck me as a shade too forceful and the approach too determined. […] (N. A., Gramophone, Aug. 1983)
